Avoid Starting A Business In Debt

by Patrick Gibson

Working for yourself is a take it or leave it proposition. Most love it. The only problem is dealing with money. Simply put, you need it to get up and running. You can borrow money, but then you will be paying it back perpetually.

Americans are in debt. The same goes for small business owners. Why do most of us borrow money to start a business whether we need it or not? Starting with your own money keeps things positive right away.

Ideally, you want to build a business that will last for a long time. Yet, you also want to build a business that is worth something when all is said and done. If you want your venture to be worth more than most others, using your own savvy is the way to do it.

Think through the debt process. You are going to be paying it for some time into the future. Each payment will have an element of interest. Now add up the total expected interest. Think what you could do with that money!

If things go well, you will be looking to take your business to the next level at some point. This often means finding investors. One of the key measures they will focus on is your debt position. A company heavily indebted is not attractive.

Showing a tight set of books cannot be understated when it comes to financial dealings. Investors are looking for trends. They know you will try to clean up the books at the last moment. This is why they look to the beginning of the business.

It is easy enough to say do not go into debt to start a business, but how exactly is this done. Money, unfortunately, does not grow on trees, so you have to get it from some other sources. That means getting organized.

You should already have money set aside for your personal life and business. Now start and keep your business as small as possible. As you slowly start bringing in money, start buying more inventory. Always minimize expenses.

Starting a business is a great step. Now take it slow and steady. Avoid debt like the plague. As time passes, you will see a solid bottom line develop and your financial outlook will be tremendous.
