Stop Taking Risks Concerning Identity Theft
Victims of identity theft find themselves in the worst position that they will ever be. It’s very bad to be an identity theft victim, so making sure that you are protected is very important.
1. If you suspect that someone is using your identity to commit fraud crimes you must contact as soon as possible the fraud departments of the consumer reporting companies in order for them to place a fraud alert on your credit report.
Fraud alerts act as warnings for creditors in case someone makes an account or a transaction in your name. Fraud alerts come in two types: initial alert and extended alert.
They are different due to their duration. An initial alert is usually used for ninety days on any credit report while extended fraud alerts can be used for a period of seven years. Each costumer is free to choose the one that provides him with the best protection and they don’t need to contact all the costumer reporting companies.
2. Another good decision that should be made fast when it comes to identity theft is closing your account to prevent any transactions from being made. If you want to obtain information about any accounts opened in your name you should use the ID Theft Affidavit.
3. Don’t forget to file a report or complain with the local police in your community where the identity theft occurs. And always try to obtain a copy of the report which you are to provide your creditors and others that might be in need of any proof of the crime.
4. Similarly don’t forget to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. The commission keeps a database of all identity theft cases used and filed by law enforcement agencies for investigations. By filing a complaint to the proper authority will help you to understand better all issues regarding identity theft.
Make sure that you protect your own private information because the internet is one of the places where you risk the most with your private identity. Also, do not give any personal information or any extra information about yourself when making transactions online. Also, keep in mind that you have to choose a trustworthy company to deal with your transactions if you want to be safe.
Sometimes you will receive emails that will inform you about different prizes that you won; ignore those emails because they are not true and will only put your personal information in danger. You will be asked to fill a form with your personal information; most criminals use this method to gather information about people. Also, if you happen to receive such mails make sure that you inform the Federal Trade Commission about it to help prevent other people.
