In fact it is estimated that 70% of the family run businesses that fail (the average life expectancy for family owned firms is 24 years) fail because the owner/manager did not understand the dynamics of running a family business.

There are many different views on what constitutes a family owned business. However for the purpose this article I will say that a family owned business is one that is has a majority share (51% or more) owned by one family.

One of the key areas to look at when analyzing a family business is the area of conflict. With the combined emotional pressures of business goals and family issues there will inevitably be conflict in a family-owned business. It is important to educate yourself on this area as with proper guidance and processes in place, the damage that this conflict causes to your bottom line can be minimized.

One of the key areas that family businesses need to look at is succession planning. This is an area that if you ‘fail to plan you plan to fail’. The best strategy is to create a process for it before any challenges arise so that you can ensure that family business has a smooth transition between generations.

Strategy formulation in a family business is another key area to look at for maximum growth and effectiveness. It is crucial to get this area right as strategy is the core building block of any company. What can happen is family based dynamics and conflicts get in the way of proper creation and implementation of strategy. It’s important to not let these factors get in the way of your company implementing the right strategy if it’s to survive long term.

In terms of making sure your family business or one that you work for survives the critical thing is to maintain open communication and actively plan ahead and put in processes for these issues.

Obviously the level of interconnectedness and involvement of your family (or your company owner’s family) will determine the degree of importance this subject may have for you personally. However my assertion is that these are issues that all family businesses need to contend with.

Exercises and EFFECTIVE exercises are not the same thing. In other words, some exercises can actually be harmful to burning belly flab.

If a killer set of abs is your goal, you need to avoid these 7 exercises.

1. Lying straight-legged leg raises (first 45 degrees off of floor, one leg at a time or both at the same time) 2. Hanging leg raises with an arched back 3. Sit-ups with the feet supported 4. Straight legged sit-ups 5. ANY machine-based ab exercise 6. ANY machine-based twisting exercise 7. Torso twists

Your exercises need to target the abs and the supporting areas of your body, like your core, not your arms, your legs or your neck. The point here is to BURN the belly fat and DEVELOP the abdominal muscles.

Avoid these bad exercises if your goal is to develop really great abs.

1. Lying straight-legged leg raises: An excellent exercise. The lying straight-legged leg raises are great for exercising the LOWER abdomen, but not the classic six-pack abs. Any exercise is a better than no exercise, but if your goal is to develop your abs; you’re wasting your workout time on lying straight-legged leg raises.

2. Hanging leg raises with an arched back: Hanging leg raises are terrific ab exercises if done with a straight back. When the back is arched, these hanging leg raises wont even do anything to your abs.

3. Sit-ups with the feet supported: when your feet are supported, all the advantages to your abs are destroyed but sit ups with the feet NOT supported are very good ab exercises.

4. Straight legged sit ups: When the legs are kept straight out during sit ups, the muscles that are being used are in the back and lower abdomen… not the abs!

5. Any machine based ab exercise: Great abs are earned the hard way. No machine is going to build your abs. Get over it and pass on the machines.

6. Any machine based twisting exercise: Twisting doesn’t work the abs. Twisting exercises are good exercises to reduce the size of the waist, but that’s all they do.

7. Torso Twists: Again… twisting doesn’t work the abs or burn belly fat.

Make your exercise session time work FOR you. If you goal is to burn off that sagging stomach and build your abs, make the most of your exercise program.

Doing exercises that are not designed to develop your abs is simply a waste of your time and energy, plain and simple.
