Got Debt?

by JR Rooney

What is debt?

Debt is that which is owed. A person or company owing debt is called a debtor. An entity to whom debt is owed is called a creditor. Debt is used to borrow purchasing power from the future. Companies use debt as a part of their overall corporate finance strategy.

What types of debt are available

There are numerous types of debt obligations. They include loans, bonds, mortgages and promissory notes. It is common to borrow large sums for major purchases, such as a mortgage, and pay it back with an agreed premium interest rate over time, or all at once at a later date (balloon payment). The amount of money outstanding is usually called a debt. The debt will increase through time if it is not repaid faster than it grows. In some systems of economics this effect is termed usury, in others, the term “usury” refers only to an excessive rate of interest, in excess of a reasonable profit for the risk accepted.

Larger companies can issue debt in the form of securities, known as bonds. Each bond entitles the holder to specific interest and principal payments. Bonds are traded in the bond markets, and depending on the rating are relatively safe investments in comparison to stocks.

Start Online Business Relationships – Build Your Social Networks

by Jane Kozlinski

Did you know you can start online business relationships and succeed faster just by using your social network? You can do it the slow way – talk one on one with people in person, or do it fast by going online and using the new web 2.0 social sites to build relationships with thousands of others, connect with new prospects, and reach people that you may never meet any other way.

These new sites are called social networking sites, since each person can contribute and interact on these websites. Normally, you start by creating a profile about yourself, giving enough information about you and your business so others will feel more familiar with you. You can also list your interests, which will attract others who are looking for help or for friends with similar interests.

Sites like Twitter are really easy to use – you just sign up and post a sentence about yourself, and it is instantly available for the world to see and interact with. Other websites like Facebook are huge, with thousands of things you can do, and with tens of millions of other users, there’s no limit to the amount of people you can reach. If you interact with the groups and discussions on these kinds of sites, you can really reach a lot of people quickly.

One thing that isn’t mentioned much is the ability to use these sites to communicate with celebrities – actors, the wealthy, or the famous – and build a relationship with them that few others have. These kinds of connections can really start online business successes faster than most people realize.

These social networking sites will also give you clues about things that others are doing to start a online business, and you can use these ideas and processes for starting online business ideas you have.

Other members on these sites also complain about problems they have and desires that are unfulfilled. You can take these ideas, and create solutions that these people will pay for, and generate a good online income from it.

Another benefit of these social networking sites is the ability for them to create traffic to your money sites, creating better search engine results, and more links pointing to your web site.

Networking on these social websites is an important step if you start a online business, and if you get active and start online business relationships, you can leverage them for years to come. This relationship equity in your business can become more valuable than everything else in your business.

Flexibility and Mobility Through Online Fax Services

by Christopher Fitch

If you have ever wondered what makes smart phones so popular, just think about the type of individual who uses such a device. And then imagine the freedom these smart phones allow. For the type of clients we typically see, mobility is a welcome commodity. But with reams of paperwork moving from one person to another, what benefit is mobility when you need to be close to the office?

Back in the mid-1980’s, the fax machine became a popular solution. It reduced the need for high-cost courier services and eliminated some of the opportunity costs associated with time-sensitive documentation. The problem with the traditional fax machine today is that it needs to be hard-wired to an office. So, unless you or someone working for you sits next to this machine, you will never know that an important document has finally arrived for your review and execution.

Finally, online fax services have evolved to the point where they offer real value, particularly for small businesses and entrepreneurs who need to be mobile. Thanks to high-speed internet (hardwired and mobile) and low hardware costs, online fax services can transmit and store large files for a relatively low cost. As a result, you can outsource this chore for as little as $10 USD per month.

On the surface, online fax services might not seem like such a big deal. Why outsource faxing for $120 per year when a fax machine goes for less than $30 and you can do it yourself? Well, $120 includes the phone line (how much does a dedicated fax line run you now?) More importantly for the small business owner, it also includes forwarding your faxes by e-mail (yes, this includes your web-enabled smart-phone!). This allows you to receive faxes anywhere you can connect to the net.

As for sending, you can fax out virtually any type of document, including JPG and those created in MS Word (there are 158 different file types that the industry’s best providers can accommodate).

Since subscribers can operate from anywhere, questions arise as to the need for high-expense items like office leases, reception, telephone lines, etc. And since all faxes are imaged (both incoming and outgoing), even physical storage expenses can be reduced.

The best service we have come across is one offered through myFax. Even at their lowest pricepoint of $10 per month, their package allows 200 incoming and 100 outgoing faxes plus a local or toll-free number registered at no charge. Their highest cost is $40 month, but all plans allow for data sent through their system to be stored for 1 year. What will typically happen is your faxes will get sent to your e-mail inbox as an attachment. However, if you do not have access to your inbox (either by computer or handheld), you can also access their web address and peruse documents there. Their interface is easy to use and very intuitive. Plus, it allows for higher volume mass faxes.

Since most small business owners and entrepreneurs value flexibility, the fax machine of the 80’s has always been one of the last obstacles to true mobility. Through mFax, you can experience the pure meaning of mobility and start enjoying the savings immediately.

ISO 13485 – Controlling forms

by Mark Kaganov

One of the controversial issues with interpretation of ISO 13485:2003 Standard and other standards is control of forms. Many companies, by some reason, treat forms differently than documents, leaving them not controlled. Per ISO 13485:2003, clause 4.2.3, “Documents required by the quality management system shall be controlled. Let’s see if a form qualifies to be a “document” that “shall” be controlled.

Forms and tables are frequently used as lower-level documents. Very often, it is not necessary to write a traditional instruction with the purpose, scope and instructions if a simple table is sufficient to provide these instructions. One of the typical non-conformities that companies get during audits of their ISO 13485 quality management systems is against forms that are not part of the documentation system.

When questioning the validity of a form without a number, I often hear: “This is just a form.” It always escapes me, why should a form be different from any other instruction? How would we know that we need a form if it is not referenced in our documentation system? After all, if you are not managing forms by assigning document or part number and decide to modify them, how can you be sure that the latest revision is being revised? At best it would be difficult. In practice it would be impossible.

Anyway, what is a form? A short review will help answering this question. If we have a list of directions telling us to:

– make a table with two columns

– write down your business name into the 1-st column

– put your business’s URL into the 2-nd column

I would bet that most of us would call this three-line direction an instruction. So, if this is an instruction, it shall be controlled.

Now, what if we were given a two-column table where the first column was titled “You company name” and the second column “Company’s URL”. We were asked to complete the form. Easy to imagine, we would enter our company’s name and our URL in the table. It means that we interpreted this table as an “instruction”.

If we agree that our first three-line instruction in English was a “real” instruction, that needs to be controlled, the second, completed form, resulting in the same output, must also be an instruction!

I think that the confusion regarding forms used in ISO 13485 quality management systems is based on the fact that forms serve two purposes. Empty forms are brief instructions written in tabular language. After forms are filled out, they become records. Records are managed in a different manner than procedures. Let’s remember this and treat our blank forms as instructions letting the documentation management process govern them. There are a couple of simple tests you may take when you are tempted to use a form that has not been assigned a part number:

– Let’s say that somebody changed your favorite form. Would you want to know why?

– If you revised your form, would you like your assemblers to use the latest revision?

– If you were absent, would you like folks to find your form just by finding a reference to it in your ISO 13485:2003 quality management system?

Just one “Yes” to the above questions indicates that your form is definitely a candidate for Documentation Control practices.

Diet Your Way To a Slim and Trim Figure!

by Dane Masters

Time was when you were much admired for your slim and trim figure! Today, people look at your belly first before they look at your face! This losing battle of the bulge is giving you nightmares. And you decide to take up a weight loss diet. It is advisable to get advice from those who are already on such diets. But do not be put off by the diverse views that are presented to you. There will be those who try their level best to persuade you not to go in for such fanciful stuff–it has not worked for them; where is the guarantee that it will work for you? Yet others promise miraculous results if you only follow the same diet that they are following. Whatever the case may be, if you are serious about getting back a more balanced body, go in for a weight loss diet–a good one!

The “diet industry” is thriving today! In fact, it can rightfully be classified as a separate industry all on its own! But when did the concept of such diets actually originate? For that, one would have to go back to the seventies. Americans were making it out real good! The economy had been stable for a great number of years, giving people the opportunity to eat more and more! Naturally, their bellies tended to exhibit the first signs of increasing prosperity! Some could live with this comfortably, but not all! And so these weight-conscious Americans proved beneficial for the launching of weight loss diets. It was not an industry as such in those days; people produced their own diet charts. Sadly, these diets only indicated what was not to be consumed, and gave no clues as to what to actually eat. It does not take much imagination therefore, to conclude that these diets did not really produce much beneficial results.

Since the husband could not control his expanding girth himself, his wife had to do it for him. Constant checks were made by her to ensure that the belly was not expanding. To keep his weight in control, she would totally get rid of all those foodstuffs that caused weight gain, or gradually reduce their quantities from their regular meals. she had never heard of a balanced diet or proper nutrition. And there were no qualified professionals around to offer any sort of advice concerning food or diets.

It was in the early eighties however that weight loss diets became a full-fledged institution. By now, the battle against the bulge had become a real enough health issue for governments and healthcare providers to sit up and take notice. The census and healthcare figures of this period reveal that nearly one out of every four Americans was clinically obese. And weigh loss diets and practitioners literally began crawling out of the woodwork to set shop. This was the time when numerous fads emerged. There were some weight loss diets that encouraged vegetarianism. Others like the Atkins weight loss diet promoted eating of meet, but disallowed starch and carbohydrates. Some other weight loss diets promoted fresh fruits and vegetables exclusively while still others eschewed everything that contributed to excess calories. This was an era when calorie counters emerged and weight loss diets became synonymous with body fat analysis and lean muscle weight.

All this is not new for me. After all, I have suffered an expanding belly and fallen prey to any number of weight loss diets. The gains were not much where weight loss was concerned, but were great where knowledge was concerned. Yes, it is easy to lose weight by almost starving oneself, but you also end up with a sallow complexion and a feeling of weakness. Follow the given diet, but also exercise! Exercise that helps to burn calories, coupled with a great weight loss diet, will result in a fab-looking body full of strength and vitality!

What is Emotional Intelligence and How Can It Help You Perform Better at Work?

by Alison K. Mitchelson

In Sydney’s business environment and in New South Wales generally, today, we have a vibrant and growing business community. As with any market that’s growing at this pace, the demand for business talent and leadership is growing as well. To that end, there are many, many people who are trying hard to get ahead and find their niche here.

One talent that will assist you in getting ahead in this market is to tap into your emotional intelligence, also known as EI. There are many different competing definitions of just what emotional intelligence is, but most deal with a multimodal view of intelligence.

Simply put, if you have emotional intelligence in the high range, you become better at reading other people’s emotions. This means that you can read your coworkers’ emotions in a room, and you can help isolate problems that are occurring within a business better and sooner before they get out of hand.

If you have a high emotional intelligence quotient, or EQ, you can be identified in the workplace because you can use your own changing moods to focus on different parts of a project. Yes, you’re good at reading other people’s emotions, true, but are also good at identifying your own. This means that you can suit your mood to the task at hand. For example, if you have a high EQ, you are more likely to switch to a task within a project that suits your current emotional mood, rather than trying to “beat your head against a wall” if you’re stuck on one aspect and just not getting anywhere.

As you think about how to use your emotional intelligence in the workplace, think about it as a way of taking a glimpse at what other people are thinking. Because you can “read” people’s moods from their body language and facial expressions, this can give you a competitive edge over others, in any situation where you may be arranging a contract or doing other types of negotiations. In fact, if you watch someone read something, you can often read their reaction to a contract as they read it.

If you’re moving into a leadership position, the second part of emotional intelligence comes into play; what used to be called “charisma” or the ability to lead people. People with high EQs know what to tell others to get the most work out of them; they know when someone needs a bit of stress added to break through a problem, and they’re the ones who can read the body language of subordinates well enough to know when to step in and offer assistance, a pat on the back, or an “I appreciate what you’re doing,” for example.

It can be useful to engage emotional intelligence if you’re doing public speaking, but it’s best used in small groups and one-on-one situations. You may be able to enhance it by practicing, but its limits are nonetheless finite and to be respected.

All businesses, of course, value people who can “get along well with others.” However, emotional intelligence’s model indicates that this isn’t necessarily something you can learn. Whether or not that’s true, being aware of how you fit in on the emotional intelligence scale and being aware of what both your abilities and limitations are as you use this ability to advance your career or to better serve your clients with your own business can only help you.

Making Incredible School Loan Consolidations

by David Hall

Depending on the total amount of student loans that you have you can choose one of several repayment plans with loan repayment periods up to 360 months. The interest rate on your Federal consolidation loan will be the weighted average of the current interest rates on your eligible student loans being consolidated rounded up to the nearest 1/8%, or 8.25%, whichever is less. Consolidation gives you the opportunity to reduce the size of your monthly payment. Consolidation gives you the opportunity to reduce the size of your monthly payment.

Few families and high school students can afford to pay for a traditional college education without some financial aid, and the aid of either loans or scholarships. You can always avail of a college loan consolidation or a school loan consolidation for all your student loans. A Federal consolidation loan allows you to combine all of your eligible Federal education loans into one loan with a low, fixed interest rate and a flexible repayment plan.

There is no credit report review. Co-signers are not required. Oftentimes, you can consolidate both private and federal student loans.

You will be required to have good credit, or apply for a loan with a creditworthy co-borrower. The difference is that private school loan consolidation is credit based while federal school loan consolidation is not. Medical school graduates interested in consolidating private medical school loans must seek out a private student consolidation loan with a lender. Distinguishing between private school loan consolidation and federal school loan consolidation can sometimes be tricky . Interest rates are typically variable and adjusted quarterly.

Consolidating your student loans during your grace period will secure a lower interest rate. You will definitely find one that fits your budget and earnings. Federal Stafford Loans, present to both undergraduate and graduate students, are one of the downright affordable ways to pay for school. School loan consolidation is an option that former students and parents have to reduce their debt.

Finally, make sure you don’t try to include any federal student loans in the private loan consolidation process. You may also desire to specify that you are interested in locking in the lowest interest rate possible for the life of the loan. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from relatives or friends who may have more experience.

If you begin to encounter any problems get ready to acquire school loan consolidation, it may be your best alternative to bankruptcy. Consolidation loans combine several student or parent loans into one bigger loan from a single lender, which is then used to pay off the balances on the other loans. Some lenders offer private consolidation loans for private education loans as well. Again, education is an important aspect of ensuring good future for you and your family.

Student loan consolidation is, in most cases, an outstanding option for reducing monthly payments, locking in low rates, and earning opportunities to shave money off your loan balance with lender incentives. If you’re pondering whether or not to consolidate student loans, consider this; all college loans have unique attributes, and not all may be perfectly suited for student loan consolidation. When you consolidate student loans, you lock in the current interest rate by allowing the lender to repay the entire amount, then repaying the lender free from government interest rate fluctuations.

Investing in Silver – How to Buy Silver Bullion Coins Under Spot

by Christina Goldman

How would you like to buy silver coins at a discount?

I’m going to tell you about a certain type of coins that you can purchase under the spot price of silver.

Yep. Below cost. The type of silver bullion that I’m referring to are 90% silver coin bags.

You’ll often hear 90% silver coin bags referred to as ‘junk silver’ bags. They aren’t really ‘junk,’ though. This term is simply used to describe a bag of circulated silver coins in average condition. These coins are really only valued for their silver content, not their collectible value.

‘Junk silver’ bags contain coins that were struck in 1964 or earlier, such as the silver Kennedy half dollars, Roosevelt dimes, and Washington quarters. They are comprised of 90% silver. After 1964, the amount of silver contained in coins was reduced to 40%.

Here’s the neat part – the 90% silver bags containing dimes or quarters can be purchased through some dealers for as much as 1% under spot! It’s like getting silver on sale! How cool is that?

Yes, the coins will look worn, have nicks, scratches, and show their 40-plus year-old- age. However, keep in mind, it’s what inside that counts. And these ‘junk silver’ coins will usually still contain over 99 percent of their silver content.

So which would you rather have? A newly-minted, pristine American Silver Eagle that costs 9% (at current prices) over spot? Or a bag of 90% silver coins that you can buy for 1% under spot? If you buy the bags, you can get 10% more silver! Amazing, huh?

You can purchase ‘junk silver’ bags very easily online from any of the larger, reputable dealers or from your local coin shop in various sizes and denominations. Or, you can try one of the popular online auctions sites for even greater savings.

Taking Away the Background

by David Peters

Background Removal refers to the removal of the background or the backdrop of the picture wherein the object/objects are placed. While removing the background, the entire background or merely parts of the background we desire can be removed.

Before the popularity of digital photography and editing software the process of removing the background from an image was an incredibly laborious process.

In years past background removal was performed in a darkroom with the required ambient conditions which typically included proper room temperature. The film would be placed in working chemical solvent and had to be monitored constantly. Overexposure of the film to the solution would typically result in an increase in background blur and decrease in resolution.

Today background removal is accomplished through the use of digital photo editing software such as GNU Image Manipulation Program, Photoshop, or GIMP. GIMP is a special type of graphics editing software that is able to support some types of object-oriented (or vector) graphics.

While it is not strictly imperative that your choice of digital photo editing software be able to support all types of object-oriented graphics, the main advantage in using GIMP is that it allows for easy vector to raster conversion.

Other popularly used raster graphics editors and digital photo editors will also work just fine. Most digital photo editors have a number of plug-ins which can modify the background in different ways. Plug-ins are computer programs with highly specific purposes. Most sophisticated photo editing programs use special purpose plug-ins and will perform background editing and removal based on different criteria.

Once you have removed the background you will find that your objects without backgrounds can be used and manipulated in a variety of different ways. You can place them in a new backdrop and in different situational contexts. For example, a flower in a garden could have the garden replaced with an vase. The object can be moved around any which way and its alignment with the new background can also be changed.

The great thing about an object without a background is that it maintains all its properties like shape and size, but becomes more flexible to individual usage.
