Methods You Can Use to Clean Your Gutters

by Hubert Miles

There are two different ways to cleaning the gutters on your home. In the information below we’ll discuss these two ways in more detail.

Leaf blower usage

1) To use this method you’ll need to get a leaf blower, rope, safety goggles, dust mask, and an extension ladder.

2) You will tie one end of the rope to the top rung of the extension ladder and the other end to the leaf blower. When you climb the ladder and get onto the roof, untie the rope from the extension ladder and pull the leaf blower up to the roof.

3) Before using the leaf blower, be sure to use wear your safety glasses and a dust mask. When using the leaf blower to clear the gutters always work from a safe position on the roof and don’t stand too close to the end of the roof.

Using a water hose

1) If you decide to use this method you’ll need the following tools: small hand shovel, a ladder, and a garden hose with a sprayer. Take the small hand shovel and dig out much of the large material as you can. To make clean up easier use a small trash bag.

2) Using a water hose with a spray nozzle on the end, from the roof spray out the full length of the gutter from the high side to the downspout pushing the debris. You may need to use a scrub brush for stubborn areas of hardened dirt.

3) In conclusion, wash out the downspouts to remove any residual debris or residue. If needed, once you are on the ground you can use a clothes hanger or plumber’s snake to clean out the downspouts.

If you are looking for a way to reduce the number of cleanings or if you live under a lot of trees, you may want to have wire mesh or a leaf guard system installed. While these systems are not infallible, they will block a majority of the material from getting clogged in the gutters. Most systems like these are custom installed, just make sure they can be easily removed and reattached if cleaning is required.
