What You’ll See at Craft Shows

by Geoffrey Higgins

I took a well-deserved break today from the booth to check out some other parts of the fair. I deserved it; it has been a very successful week and the jewelry my girlfriend were almost sold out.

Sometimes, you just have to walk around to appreciate the nice things in life. It was anything but quiet in the fair; there was activity all around. There’s the occasional love struck teenage couple, enjoying a stick of cotton candy. There’s the family moving about, with the siblings talking back at each other until their father tells me off. And of course, there are the rides, always the center of attention in fairs.

These aren’t the only things you could find in a fair, of course. Like us, a number of people had set up a booth of their own and were selling various arts and crafts here and there. Curious, I thought maybe I should scout out the “competition”.

I must say, there were a lot of interesting objects being showcased at the fair, but I was more taken in by the people selling them. I especially liked to casually strike up a conversation with those who were selling wares in the same interest as we were; comparing notes without being too nosy. Unfortunately, though, most of the people in charge of the booths were hired help, and weren’t exactly the most fun to talk to. A few even seemed bored.

I was interested to see these two women who were jointly minding a group. They had amazing wooden sculptures on display! Indeed, one of them was behind the counter, carving a piece of wood with a curved knife. The other one enthusiastically called me out, asking me to let her draw me using charcoal (for cost, of course). It was interesting, and I told her that I’ll return with my girlfriend so we’ll have a drawing together.

There were many types of people in fairs and festivals. Never a dull day in this chosen line of work, and I’m quite happy I’ve chosen to quit my day job for this.
