Career Retraining…What Are The Options?
When considering career retraining, it’s important to first define what you DO want and DON’T want from the job you’re looking to get into. Be sure that the grass actually is greener before you spend time and effort re-directing your life. We recommend looking at the big picture first to avoid disappointment.
For example, many people have recently retrained for a career as a HIPS assessor for the new government initiative for housing. We now have four times the number of assessors than are needed in this country; so not the ideal situation if you’re looking for a job as an assessor.
We recommend that before you start you might want to consider some answers to the following questions.
* Having retrained, do you want to earn more money & if so how much?
* Do you want this career retraining skill to last until you’re 65 years old?
* After training do you want your skill to enable you to find employment easily?
* Should the skill you learn enable you to make choices about where you can live?
If the answer is yes to three or four of these questions, you’ve already removed the vast majority of the jobs in the UK. You should be looking for a job in an industry that pays above average, is growing and/or has more jobs available than people to fill them.
The industry needs to be future-proof and not go the way of ship building and coal mining i.e. a growing sector. It also needs to be practiced all over the UK/world and not concentrated into a few areas to give you that choice of where to live.
The biggest industry in the UK to tick all of the above boxes is the computer industry, particularly IT. But don’t think its all nerdy people sitting in front of screens all day – there’s a lot more to it than that.
The greater number of people in the IT sector are just like you and me, have enjoyable interesting jobs and earn better than most. Employers have challenges finding qualified people to fill the jobs due to a shortage of skilled people, just check out any job site and you’ll see for yourself.
