Computer Blues: Programming a New Future

by Herbert Reich

If you’ve been considering taking some computer programming courses or even if you’re just wondering what a relative or friend will be doing with their degree in the field, there are some things which you’ll need to know about computer programming to understand the information you come across. In the IT field, computer programming is also known as coding and the work consists of a process of writing, testing, debugging and maintaining the code which makes up computer programs.

When looking at learning computer programming and perhaps becoming a programmer yourself is to learn more about the different programming languages which programmers use in the course of their professional lives. Depending on the particular projects they are working on, a programmer may find a certain programming language more or less useful. However, many computer programmers do not write very much code at work, instead being engaged in maintaining old code (also known as legacy code by programmers) or adding new functionality to this code.

If you are looking at the discipline of computer programming, it is always an interesting argument to not whether it falls into an engineering discipline, a craft discipline or an art discipline. In many cases, it can be assumed that good programmers, especially ones that create something new altogether, are doing all three. Good code is usually defined in terms of it being evolvable and efficient. As you can see, these things are quite subjective and different people will have different criteria for this standard. This subjectivity can add a great deal to the experience that is gained in the field.

There are certain standards that the computer programmer must adhere to as he or she writes code. The first standard is typically characterized as performance: how well does the machine work, and what kind of resources does it take up? The second standard is reliability, that is, how often it runs correction, and the third is robustness, which defines how well it deals with data type conflict and how well it foresees the issues in mind. Usability refers to how clearly and intuitively the program runs, while portability refers to the range of machines which are capable of running it.

If you are in a place where you are looking to make sure that you can get the right kind of work for yourself, or if you are looking to see what computer programming might be able to offer you, make sure that you take a look at this discipline and figure out what your options are. There are definitely people who are perfect for this field and who don’t even know it, and you will find that with just a little bit of careful thought and examination that you will be able to decide if it is for you. Check out the computer programming courses that are available at Ashworth College and see what you can learn both about the field and yourself!
