If you are considering starting a business and don’t have resources for a lot of overhead, Ecommerce can help. It can help with a lot of business problems. There is usually little or no start up costs associated with it, and doesn’t need much overhead, making it safe method to generate revenue.

How can you start an ecommerce business or add ecommerce to an existing business’s offerings? Although many people think it requires special skill and huge expenses, nothing could be further from the truth. Starting an ecommerce business is a simple, straightforward process when you approach it in a step-by-step manner.

1. Make a business plan. As with any business, an ecommerce business will require basic business planning. You will need to choose a product or service and acquire funding to buy the product. You will need a way to quickly find and expand a customer base as well as a plan for providing excellent customer service to them. You will need a system in place of how the ordering process will be managed from the beginning to the end.

2. Find a good ‘devil’s advocate’. Whether you are experienced in business or a total newcomer, it never hurts to bounce ideas off another person. They can point out any obvious flaws in your plan. Perhaps your product is heavy or otherwise expensive to ship, or they may require more storage than you have available. Regardless of the problems, a good friend and/or experienced business person may be able to offer a much needed second perspective.

3. Set up the actual online store. For a traditional, ecommerce site, you will need a website, secure server, shopping cart software, and a way to process credit card payments. Although this sounds like a daunting list, many companies offer free or low cost ecommerce packages that include all of these features. As an alternative, you can start using traditional auction sites, although these will usually take a hefty cut of your profit. Many people find that a personal ecommerce website is a better choice.

4. Market, market, market. You can do this in person by telling as many people as possible about your new ecommerce site. You can also join webrings and business directories. Many people find that purchasing advertising from a search engine such as Google can be helpful. Nontraditional methods might include joining active message boards and putting your ecommerce site’s address in your signature.

Starting up an ecommerce site is easy, as you can see. So not taking advantage of this sales tool would be crazy.
