The Ugly Underbelly Of Affiliate Marketing

by David Gates

We’ve all seen ads promising that we can use the Internet to make money. It’s tempting to accept this as true, but we all know that there are scams out there, and no such thing as easy money. So, how do we figure out which promises can actually come true and which are empty?

The world of affiliate marketing provides some definite advantages for a certain kind of person looking for a particular sort of opportunity. The basic idea behind affiliate marketing is easy to understand and has been around forever. You help people sell their products and services, and they give you a cut of the profits.

For example, you may have earned a referral reward from a business for bringing them a new customer. A company selling air conditioners might give you a cut of the profit they get when they make a sale on your recommendation; a car dealer might offer you a free tune-up or credit toward accessories. Affiliate marketing works on the same principle.

If you find the right product and a good strategy for bringing in sales, affiliate marketing can be a great source of income. And there are definite benefits to working as an affiliate marketer instead of at a usual job. But it isn’t fast money, or easy money. You have to work as hard at affiliate marketing as you do at any other job, if you want to be successful.

One of the really nice advantages of being an affiliate marketer is that you are not tied to the product. Which means you don’t have any initial expenses. If you start promoting a product and the product doesn’t sell well, no worries, just switch to a better performing product and you’re still in business.

And being your own boss in an affiliate marketing business has some quality of life advantages, too. You basically have unlimited freedom to work when you want, where you want, and as much as you want. You can do just a few hours a week, or put in a 50 hour week. It’s all up to you, and where you put your priorities and your passion.

There are tradeoffs, however. You are on your own with affiliate marketing, with no regular salary or steady promise of employment. When you are first starting out, things can get rough, and if there is a downturn in the economy or a product stops selling, life gets interesting. There is a risk that you have to accept to gain independence, and not everyone wants that risk.

And, of course, there is a direct relationship between how much time you put into your affiliate marketing business and how much money you make. There is no one to tell you to get moving when you’re feeling lazy, so it takes a lot of self-motivation and determination to be successful. If you are a self-starter who can persist through difficult times, though, affiliate marketing really can provide a nice living. I know. I’m doing it!
