How do I know if I am a new investigator by NIH criteria?
Applicants are considered new investigators if they have not previously served as the principal investigator on any PHS-supported research project, including an R01. Exceptions to this include the small grant (R03), an Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15), an exploratory/developmental grant (R21), or certain research career awards directed to individuals at the beginning of their research careers (K01, K08, K12s, K22, K23, K25, or K30).I am basing my answer to this question on my experience with over 450 gender variant patients who have come to see me over the last 21 years. Some careers such as physician, professor, and industrial research scientist are traditional choices for students of molecular and cellular biology. Many new careers are evolving daily as a result of developing new biotechnologies. The following is a partial list of careers available to students with strengths in molecular and cellular biology. Web sites related to those career categories have been included in most cases. Even in the best high school science classrooms, it is often difficult for students see how textbook work translates to a career in academia or industry. This program seeks to help teachers address this problem by setting up email interviews between high school students and scientists.Some careers such as physician, professor, and industrial research scientist are traditional choices for students of molecular and cellular biology.
