How Home Schooling Got Started

Home schooling is something which has been with us for a long time now. After all, it was until fairly recently the only educational option open to many children. Home schooling has been coming back into style in this country. For many different reasons, some parents are not happy with the schools in their area. If they have the free time to educate their children in the home, they will then often choose to do so.

In the U.S. from 1964 to 1981, many parents gave a critical look at our nation’s schools. Both parents and teachers argued that schools were failing students and not giving pupils the individual attention that they needed to flourish.

Parents whose children were enrolled in these crowded schools made the assessment that they would be better able to provide their children with a good education than could the public schools and thus began the homeschooling movement in this country. In most states, an “umbrella school” is available – this is a standardized suggested curriculum for home schooling parents, including tests; the state often provides the necessary school supplies for students and gives the child a monthly checkup on their academic progress. The program is designed to give home schooled children as close as possible to a standard scholastic environment.

Parents who want to home school need to meet some legal requirements; they need to locate and be accepted by a certified correspondence school. Compulsory attendance laws have to be followed and a state approved curriculum adhered to.

If you are looking into the possibility of home schooling your children, you should consider getting in touch with other home schooling parents. You can have group classes once a week and group field trips and the like to give children a chance to socialize, something which is a problem area for many home schooled students.

A lot of parents who home school have worries about how home schooling can affect their child’s chance of getting into college. While each state permits parents of home schooled students to issue transcripts for their child, it is suggested by the Board of Education that these parents keep detailed records in case they are needed. Home schooled students are now allowed to enroll in over 900 colleges.

The whole idea of home schooling is that children’s natural curiosity will spur them to learn and pursue their areas of interest.

It has been stated that children who have been home schooled are usually way ahead of their classmates that attend regular schools, and that home schoolchildren are even smarter.
