Choosing The Best Secured Loan For You

by Chris Channing

Secured loans are exactly what they say they are; secured. People with good credit can use something valuable as collateral to receive a loan for a certain amount of money. There are a few types of secured loans available, so its important to consider your needs prior to applying for a loan. You could end up with the “wrong” loan for your needs if you do not consider certain factors.

The two main types of loans that are used are mortgage loans, and non-recourse loans. They both require collateral but work a bit differently in the event of non payment.

A mortgage loan works by a person taking out a loan and using their home as collateral. This works if the person owes a great amount of money, and cannot afford to pay it off when it is needed. In the event that the borrower cannot pay the mortgage, then their home is seized. If you are in need of a large amount of money, a mortgage loan is a good option.

If you decide to get a mortgage loan, you should be aware that even though interest is low, the value of your home will fluctuate over time. This can result in you paying a considerable amount more than what your home is really worth.

A non-recourse loan is very similar to a mortgage loan. The main difference is that whatever you list for collateral is what goes. So if you list an old car, and end up not paying, the company can only take that car. If the car cannot cover the amount you own, then they lose the difference not paid. This can work for those who may not feel secure with using their home as collateral, but it is unadvisable to purposefully use something of low value as collateral.

With anything you cannot pay, there are repercussions. If you have a mortgage loan out, then your home will be foreclosed. If you have any other type of loan listing other valuables as collateral, then that item will be repossessed. You should know what type of loan you will choose based on certain key factors. If you know you cannot afford to pay them off, risking your precious property is not worth the risk.

There are tons of low interest options when it comes to secured loans, and they each offer something a little different. Make sure you know what you need in a loan before applying and getting bound to a contract.
