Cash Back Credit Cards – Best Friend To A Consumer

by Steven J. Talrechi

Credit card companies are in fierce competition with each other for your business and offer all sorts of different perks to try to get your business. Frequent flyer miles, reward point based incentive programs; even cash back credit cards are out there as a lure for the consumer. All credit cards entail paying interest on your balance and other fees (such as annual fees and the like). However, a lot of credit cards come with extras which make the card useful above and beyond their ability to make purchases using them. One of the most popular types of reward cards are cash back credit cards, the appeal of cash back on purchases being great.

Cash back credit cards vary widely in the terms and conditions which apply but all work essentially the same. Every time a purchase is made using your card, a certain amount of cash is earned; after a given period of time, the cardholder receives this money back. Cardholders can opt to receive this in the form of a check or apply this amount towards the outstanding balance on their card. Either way, there is a benefit for the cardholder.

The method for accumulating cash rewards will differ from credit card company to company, but most will offer minimal rewards for all purchases. Some even offer double or triple reward points when purchases are made at specific locations, such as major grocery store chains or even gas stations. Extra points are usually awarded for the first purchase made on the card when the account is first opened, and bonuses can even be rewarded when large purchases are made on luxuries such as appliances or electronics.

The disbursement of these rewards will come at different times depending on the credit card company offering the cash back credit card. Many will make the payment upon the accumulation of a certain amount, $50 is common. Other companies will allow cardholders to simply request a check when they would like one. Bi-annual and annual payments are commonplace as well – and osme companies will just apply the cash rewards to the cardholder’s balance.

Like all credit cards, there are some disadvantages that come along with cash back credit cards. There is a monthly finance charge every month that there is a balance left on the card and most will also charge a monthly or annual fee. Some cash back credit card companies also charge a processing fee each time a cash reward is redeemed, and the rewards can become void if minimum monthly payments are not made on time each month. Additional fees can include late payment fees, over the credit limit fees, and even balance transfer fees, but these fees are usually included on most major credit cards.

Cash back credit cards offer many benefits to the consumer. For those who use their credit cards for the bulk of their purchases, these cards’ rewards can really add up. While there are downsides, the benefits of cash back credit cards easily outweigh them for most consumers.
