Tutorial On Different Variations Of Computer Monitors

by Chris Channing

The many differences between current day computer monitors can be astounding. But learning about the different types of monitors and knowing which are good buying decisions and which aren’t is necessary in getting the best deal. After all, it’s not just about price- its about how long the monitor will last under continual pressures of everyday use.

Most older folk who were around when computers started to make their mark in history are familiar with the CRT monitors. Most know the term CRT, but don’t know it stands for cathode-ray tube. Don’t worry, however, as knowing such information is becoming irrelevant as these styles of monitors are becoming shifted out of the industry for being too bulky.

The newer generations of computer users are stuck fast to the LCD craze, which values space and flexibility over the CRT monitors and their shortcomings. LCD monitors are much better for home usage, as well as business use since they are able to be stored in small spaces and usually aren’t too much more expensive than the CRT monitors on the market today.

Those who have a greater need for high resolution should look at what we call the TFT LCD display. This monitor stands for Thin Film Transistor LCD, in which a film of transistors is applied to the screen to offer better response times in selecting pixels to fire on and off. They are much more expensive, but necessary for web designers or graphics professionals. Those who have some money to burn and just like to see their favorites games and movies in high definition will deem it a worthy investment.

The process of buying a computer monitor can be tricky, even with the previously mentioned information. Most will see that LCD monitors are quickly taking over the industry, with some retailers not even selling CRT monitors anymore. Regardless, CRT monitors are still being sold for those who don’t mind the extra weight. Just don’t expect to go to any LAN parties anytime soon with such a monitor, without also being prepared to get an upper body workout.

Businesses in particular will need to know what type of monitor to go for in terms of cost effectiveness and dependability. From a business standpoint, LCD monitors have become a better decision for tight office spaces. In earlier times, LCD monitors were less prized because of the “dead pixel” problems they present. New technologies have remedied this problem for the most part, however.

Closing Comments

Monitors from this point in compute science history will continue to “push the envelope” as we continue to see new technologies emerge. In another decade or two, we’ll likely see the likes of TFT LCD monitors being as common as the CRT is today.
