Course Reading Speed, Comprehension Linked

by Josh Atree

A study was done at the University of Aberdeen by educational psychologists, teachers and science researchers to determine if there is a link between comprehension and reading speeds. Their hypothesis was that there is a relationship between your comprehension level and reading speed. The study results were published in a well-known academic journal. Researchers have now proven that your ability to comprehend reading material is directly related to your reading speed.

Course reading speed has always been believed to help a student to shine at school, but it’s not just an old wives tale. In a large study involving the interview of over 9000 parents, teachers and students, it was found that students with an above average class reading speed, absorbed more of the concepts being taught and were left with more time to revise their understanding.

Researchers however, are not satisfied with all the results of the study. The head of the research team emphasized the need to study further the connection between faster reading speeds and comprehension of the educational curriculums.

It is assumed by cognitive scientists that there is a critical threshold reading speed, past which understanding is greater than the national average. They refer to this as the breakthrough reading speed and further research into the definition of that threshold limit is vital if we desire to learn more about the relationship.

Many factors affect a person’s reading speed. However, a few good ways to increase reading speed from child include exposing him or her to the written word early on, and providing lots of reading material. His or her reading speed in childhood is likely to remain the same throughout adult life.

Studies claim that children with special cognitive needs can increase their chances of retaining learning information from having close support from teachers and remedial class work. There would need to be a special emphasis put on increasing the students reading speed however to a point that is close to their learning threshold.

Recently a study undertaken by researchers was published in an academic journal, which appears to prove that comprehension is proportionally linked to the course reading speed. One area that scientists are considering for future search is exploring “breakthrough reading speed.” Scientists believe that humans have a “critical threshold” reading speed; beyond this threshold, cognition is greater than the nation’s average. For scientists to uncover just how cognition and class reading speed are related, they must discover this threshold. The study claims that support from teachers and remedial teaching for kids with special cognitive needs can increase the chance of retaining information, converting data into actionable knowledge and so forth.
