Supercharging Your Affirmations

by Mark S. Kearns, MA, N.H.D.

Have you ever found yourself visually stuck? That is, unable to create and develop the clear image of your goal? I have. Even though I have been a life coach for years, I still have experienced this and I have found it to be one of the most frustrating things that can happen.

What makes the creation of images so important is that we think in pictures. Think about the color of your front door and what comes up. You probably don’t write out that color in your mind, you just know what it is because a little picture quickly flashes across your mind.

However, what happens when you just can’t connect with that clear picture of your goal? This is where confusion and doubt begin to set in and you begin to wonder if you’ve chosen the correct path. You might have the tendency to just give up and go back to your old ways. You mistakenly believe that without the ability to create your image you won’t accomplish your goal. Nothing could be further from the truth.

From years of coaching clients from all walks of life I come to develop and modify some unique applications of techniques that have yielded some very good results, especially with clients suffering from low self esteem.

I have found that one of the most powerful techniques that a person can use is to work in a mirror. It may sound strange, but the effects of mirror work influences emotions and thoughts at much deeper level. It also helps you to expose limiting beliefs that you might ordinarily glance over thinking it is just the way you are.

You may not find this mirror work very comfortable at first. It does involve a new level of intimacy. However, exercises such as this will help you uncover the deep powerful limiting beliefs that stop you from reaching your goal. If you find it difficult to share a deeper level of intimacy with yourself, you can’t really expect to be able to do it with anyone else!

For best results use a full length mirror. That way, you can monitor your full body reaction. If a full length mirror is not available, then try to use a mirror that will show your head and shoulders. The more you can see the better. However, you do want to be close enough to see your reaction in your eyes.

Although I had originally used the mirror to work with individuals with low self esteem, I have found it to be an excellent tool to use with affirmations. It is powerful and the process of seeing your reactions instead of just sensing it, as you would by simply repeating affirmations out loud or mentally to yourself is very convincing.

Watch your facial reactions as you recite your affirmations. Are you fighting against them? Are you accepting them? Is there some old underlying belief that is struggling for supremacy? Remember, when you are installing a new belief it is common to meet resistance from the old beliefs. Give the new affirmations some time, that’s part of the law of gestation. You plant the seed and give it time to grow and produce.

When some people finally decide to try reciting their affirmations in a mirror they always seem to want to rush the process. You will get much better results if you take your time with the technique and the process. For best results, sit comfortably in front of the mirror. Take a few long slow deep breaths, then look directly into your eyes and recite your affirmations. Continue this same process until you feel yourself begin drawn into the emotion of the affirmation.

When you have finally made that all important emotional connection to your affirmation you will be emotionally invested into the affirmation. This puts you well on your way to establishing the second point, that of creating belief that it will manifest just as you affirm. With that confidence you can expect the results you truly desire.
