Class Reading Speed Can Cause You To Fail

Elementary school students up to graduate students are pressured to get their reading assignments finished and to understand everything they have read. Some students are totally overwhelmed with the amount of reading they are assigned to complete. Whether they pass, fail or doing really well in school is directly correlated with their class reading speed.

Different people read at different speeds. While some people read rapidly and have good comprehension, other people struggle and may have trouble remembering what they read. Still other people read at erratic speeds and variable comprehension. Most educators feel that a comprehension rate of at least 50% is needed for learning to occur.

While a slower class overall reading speed may be actually holding a blossoming reader back from their potential, they may dream of achieving a much faster reading speed that they have seen on various advertising programs or documentaries. They may in fact, turn to self help books, cds, and software to help them with the goals they aspire to. Others may be more interested in attending a formal class to achieve the same goals.

In almost all forms, speed reading courses rely on similar methodology to increase reading speed and retention rates. These are skills many readers use without being aware of them. Some examples are skimming through a page of text. The reader then is aware of keywords and phrases which gives you an idea of the content. The brain summarizes what the readers has seen from the content it has available and the readers knowledge of those key words. Speed reading coursework attempts to accelerate this ability and teach methods on retention.

We also learn to comprehend larger chunks of information while reading, moving from individual sounds eventually up to entire phrases. Training in speed reading improves the eye’s ability to recognize longer strings of words, helping to process the material faster. How about sub vocalizing? The habit of moving your lips to the words that you read, this slows reading speed, and many of the courses on reading speed help eliminate it, while others use it as a means of recall in difficult text sections.

One popular option to increase the reading speed of a class uses another approach which you might have heard was not a good idea. Using a finger or something else beneath the printed line to lead the readers eye has been found to be very useful in assisting basic reading in dyslexic people and to improve speed and understanding for others.

On average, an untrained adult can reads at around 120 words per minute or two words per second. This can be easily tripled through training with good comprehension. If your reading speed is three times faster, then obviously assignments based on reading will take a third of the time! You would still save a third of your time even if you could read at twice the speed. Most of us have large amounts of reading to do. Therefore, reading speed can make the difference between success, mediocrity or failure. Of course reading speed varies from person to person naturally. Some have breakthrough reading speed and comprehension while others do not. It teaches you to recognize longer and wider series of words which processes the information faster. The methods of this class are skimming or sweeping a text to get just the keywords and the gist of the contents.
