Introduction to Affiliate Marketing

by Jeffrey Kenneth Gross

If the idea of making money on-line appeals to you, but you have no idea of how to do so, affiliate marketing is probably your best place to start.

Briefly, affiliate marketing is promoting the products and/or services of others, where you earn a commission for every sale made through you. Thousands of business people and Web-based companies rely heavily on affiliates to sell their products (such as books, software, training courses and memberships) for them.

To be a successful affiliate marketer, you don’t have to make tons of sales calls or try to convince your friends and relatives to buy from you as you might have to do in other sales positions. In fact, the majority of your affiliate sales will most likely come from total strangers that you will never communicate with directly.

That might sound impossible to you-selling without talking or dealing directly with customers. Understanding how affiliate marketing works will take a lot of the mystery out of the process.

You generally become a company’s affiliate by completing a short application. Once you sign on and are accepted as an affiliate, you are given an affiliate URL that is unique to you.

When someone accesses the company’s Web site by clicking your affiliate link, then makes a purchase, you are awarded commission from the sale. You may then be paid by check, although most affiliate programs prefer to send payment via an on-line payment processor such as PayPal.

How do people find and click on your affiliate link? The most successful affiliate markets try one or a combination of the methods below:

1.Creating your own Web site on a subject that is somehow related to the products and/or services you are promoting. Say you’ve decided to promote a line of vitamins that pays an excellent commission. Develop a health-related site full of information on various vitamins, with your affiliate link or a banner that contains your link.

2.They blog about things that would attract potential buyers to the products they are promoting as affiliates. The body of every blog entry carries their affiliate links to related products and services that their readers might be interested in.

3.You can place classified ads with your link in on-line newsletters or on other people’s sites that are related to what you are promoting.

4.Writing short articles on subjects closely tied to your products. There are a number of article databases on the Web where you can post these articles for free. When people read them and click on your affiliate link, you earn commissions from any sales that result.

Finding affiliate programs is as easy as typing “be an affiliate” or “affiliate program” into any search engine. By doing so, you will soon discover the millions of opportunities out there for you to make money on-line through affiliate marketing.
