Duties and Qualifications of Substation Electricians

A lot of kids grow up with a fascination for gadgets and how things work. And there are very few jobs that cater to this fascination than that of an electrician. It is actually quite hard to be an electrician because it requires intense training. People usually train for 3 to 4 years to become one. Though all of them deal with electronic devices, there are several kinds of electricians. One of these is the substation electrician.

Substation engineers are in charge of maintaining and running electrical substations. It is their job to handle and manipulate lots of electrical equipment. Equipment like electric relay devices, control cables, high-voltage cables, communication equipment, power transformers, station batteries and other equipment associated with the power substation is handled by these electricians.

They also work with high-energy lines and equipment. This kind of electrician has to be physically fit and must endure extreme weather conditions since most of their work is done outdoors. They also must strictly follow safety precautions, rules, and procedures and apply the basic things they learned during their training. QualificationsThere are some qualifications for substation electricians. They must have at least satisfactory results from their training program. They must know the basics of electrical theory too. Four years of apprenticeship or work experience is work related to power plant operation, substation operation, or any related work.

They must know how to install, maintain, and operate basic and common substation equipment. They also must know the how the electrical industry works and be aware of the safety rules and operating practices of substations.

Good communication and leadership skills are also expected of the electrician. This is one big draw for companies, especially if the electrician can read, write and express himself well. A lot is expected of them but with these traits, any substation electrician can be very efficient at the tasks assigned to him or her.
