Kenai River Lodge Is A Great Place To Catch Some Mighty Salmon
Alaska is a great destination for lovers of wildlife and outdoor activities. It is also one of the best destinations in the world for top class angling. Many species of fish enjoy the pristine waters but the most famous is the King salmon. These beasts reach incredible sizes and the Kenai River Lodge is a good place to land some mighty fish.
The Peninsula lies just south of Anchorage so it is easy to get to, just three hours by road. The lodge is just off the Sterling Highway so is easy to find. However, its proximity to the capital and road network does not spoil the feeling of remoteness enjoyed there. The population of the whole region is less than 60 000 people and you can hike for days without seeing anyone.
King salmon is the most sought after fish in the river. They can grow to huge sizes so the area is fantastic for trophy fishing, do not forget your camera. The King salmon has two runs from may to June so check with local guides exactly when the best time to arrive will be for the fish you wish to catch or the angling technique you prefer. For example, if you like fly fishing the shallow waters of the early season will be best.
The red salmon, more popular with cooks runs in June. Silver salmon also have two runs, one in August and the other in October. Salmon is not the only fish on the menu, there are also some pretty impressive trout to be found. Fishing licenses can be bought almost anywhere or online and the local area has tons of tackle shops to cater for every angling need.
At Kenai Lodge the hosts have made sure to cater for anglers. There is a large stretch of riverbank so that you can get up and start fishing straight away. They also provide cleaning stations, freezers for storage and a fire pit and grills for cooking. The lodge is located just off the main road from Anchorage so it is easy to access.
The wider area of the peninsula is perfect for nature lovers and sports people. Local rivers and fjords provide a number of exciting kayaking and white water rafting opportunities. Hiking trails cross the landscape and can be used for mountain biking and cross country running. Local wildlife is spectacular with bears, elk, moose and lots of birds.
Soldotna is the nearest town to the lodge and has all the amenities a traveler may need. There are shops and restaurants, museum of local history and information centres for the local parks and wildlife. Several hiking trails leave the town and are accessible by bike. In the summer months there are a range of special events and festivals to enjoy including a beer festival.
