Information Pertaining Tower Crane Inspections

by Lila Bryant

A large number of tools and equipment is applied in construction sites today. A crane fall under the category of the most valuable machines used for construction. Research indicates that most of the accidents that result in construction sites are related to hoists. Tower crane inspections should therefore be performed on a regular basis so as to minimize the occurrence of accidents.

With advanced technology, manufacturers have been able to come up with stronger and lighter hoist equipment. This has gave way for machines that have larger load handling capacity with increased speed. In addition, the effective radius has been significantly increased such that it is not possible to omit a hoist when doing construction.

There has been major upgrades in the technology that is utilized in hoisting and it is for this matter that professionals who carry out inspections should keep on training. By doing so, they will be able to inspect even the latest crane models to the required standards. Through proper inspection, it will be possible to identify problems that lead to unsafe conditions.

If the preventive maintenance applied for hoists is poor, then there will be increased number of mechanical failures. What leads to poor maintenance is assessments being carried by improperly trained inspectors because they are not able to point out all faults correctly. A given crane is also likely to face mechanical failure if the intervals of inspections are too large as compared to the work it handles.

In the market today, there are cranes that are meant to handle general jobs while there others tailored for a specific purpose. In addition, cranes are of different sizes depending on the load they are intended to lift. The fact that there are many kinds of cranes utilizing different kinds of controls calls for the need of inspectors to undergo specialized training.

As per the inspection standards, inspectors are required to be aware of rules set for a given construction site. On the other hand, all people working around the hoist equipment need to familiarize themselves with restrictions that have been put in place by the inspector. Before an inspector begins his work, he is expected to take time and observe how activities are coordinated and understand all site restrictions.

It is important that contractors follow specifications outlined by the producer of a given machine. If there is no specifications from the producer, then it is only a certified engineer who can specify them. Once the engineer indicates the suitable load capacities as well operating speed, it is the duty of an inspector to see that they are followed.

The conditions in which a crane is to be applied cannot be easily focused. It is for this reason that the manufacturer is not in position to outline the specific inspection intervals. The information that is supplied by the producer is only valid when the machine is used under average operating conditions.
