Comparing Internet Service Providers

by Laurie Groindeg

Just because you have been online for years or were the first person in your family to start using social networking platforms, streaming movies, etc., does not mean that you know everything you should about internet service providers. In fact, very few people actually know what type of service they have and how it compares to other varieties.

The question “Who are the best internet service providers in my area?” could come up when you need a new connection due to moving, a change in your budget or simply wanting something different. And although you may have heard terms such as DSL and fiber optic, you might not understand what they are. And you aren’t the only one!

But you can lessen that confusion by going online to learn about different internet types. It’s certainly much easier than calling companies and having to deal with sales pitches and tactics. They may make their connection sound like the best, but it may not be right for you.

But by going online to compare companies, you can conduct your research at your own pace without any of the pressure. You can really begin to understand what’s being said in company reviews and on sites dedicated to helping you compare providers.

If you aren’t sure about the best place to start, you can usually enter in your zip code to see what’s available near you. While you’re at it, you can familiarize yourself with common internet terms. For example, DSL stands for digital subscriber line and uses your phone line to get you connected. However, you can talk on the phone and surf at the same time.

Cable is pretty popular with avid surfers. If you’re already enjoy cable TV, chances are that the company you’re with will provide internet as well. If not, companies such as Time Warner Cable or Comcast have bundled packages which include the internet and TV. Although cable is a much faster connection than DSL, you may experience a slowdown in your connection during times when a lot of people are online. But this will depend on where you live.

A fiber optic connection is the fastest residential connection available. It also offers reliability, but does cost more than cable or DSL. But you may not be able to get this internet type where you live, so it’s best to check first. Att Uverse is one company that offers this connection for internet as well as TV and phone.

Lastly, if you live in a rural area, you now have more options than ever before. It used to be that only city dwellers could enjoy high speed internet but now there’s satellite internet providers offering exceptional service to those who can’t get cable or fiber optics. This service is generally on the expensive sign but if you sign up online, you can usually find some attractive incentives.
