No tradition helps in communicating human emotions in a more effective manner than gifting flowers or bouquets. People often go to a florist to purchase flowers for all occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, to congratulate someone, to apologize, or just to make a person happy.<\/p>\n

Some people think that this tradition started way back during ancient times with archaeologists finding proof of its existence at ancient sites. Flowers have always assumed an important place in ancient Rome and Egypt and in the civilizations of ancient Greece and China whose myths and folklore clearly exhibit this custom. These ancient cultures considered giving flowers to be a great means of communication of one’s thoughts and feelings. Greek mythology is filled with identification of certain flowers that were believed to be representations of gods and goddesses.<\/p>\n

This tradition came down to the Middle Ages, and France and England played significant roles in maintaining and upholding the tradition. The present tradition of giving a specific significance to each flower was brought to the West from Turkey, from where the French and the British imbibed it and disseminated it in Europe.<\/p>\n

The Victorian period spread this tradition of flower gifting even further. Victorians, as we know, never expressed their emotions publicly and therefore the custom of offering flowers or bouquets was considered an excellent means to communicate feelings without making use of a lot of words.<\/p>\n

The general rules of gifting flowers or bouquets were formulated during this era. For instance, if you purchased a beautiful bouquet of red roses from the florist and gave it to your beloved upside down, she will surely be angry with you. The reason being that while red roses stand for love, gifting them upside down symbolizes resentment. In fact, a large number of books were written and circulated on the language of flowers in the 19th century.<\/p>\n

Time has not been able to erode this tradition, and people in the present times still consider flowers to be the most effective means to show their emotions. In the present age, the custom of giving flowers or bouquets is rich in different meanings, and do’s and don’ts concerning the decorum of the act have acquired tremendous importance. Gifting red roses is still considered as a passionate demonstration of love, and white lilies are known to symbolize purity and elegance. A yellow coloured rose is believed to be a representation of friendship, while grief is best demonstrated by a lone marigold.<\/p>\n

Once, only particular flowers could be grown only in particular zones or terrains, which is not the case in this progressive era of science and technology.
