The broad classification of IT careers includes jobs in dozens of job titles, many career levels. It is also one of the few career paths, in the twenty-first century where a high-school graduate with self-taught skills can get a job with a Fortune 500 company just by proving he or she is a whiz-kid at writing code or building super-charged personal computers.

While you might be able to get the job, unless you’ve completed a degree program in a specialize field, you’re not going to be able to rise to through the ranks in IT careers. Even those who have been in the information technology field for years, and have risen to upper management positions, find themselves having difficulty changing jobs unless they have, at least, a Bachelors degree in an IT specialization. So if you want to rise above Junior Programmer or Tier 1 Help Desk, you’ll want to complete a degree program at an accredited college.

With that under your belt, you can rise through the ranks based on your knowledge and experience. There are so many jobs available for qualified people that you can almost take you pick, if you have the right credentials. Every industry, every business (even micro-businesses) use some form of information technology to operate on a daily basis. These positions can range from $10-$12 hourly positions to six-figure jobs. You can use your talents in every other field, from medical to manufacturing, hospitality to security.

If you’re very good at following directions and writing, you can create a resume and apply for work with the federal government. The US government often has internship positions available that will allow you to work for them for three years and end your internship at a GS-12 level. That’s something that it takes most people 15 or 20 years to achieve. On the other hand you might rise from Junior Developer to Senior Analyst in a matter of a few years, with some had work and some talent.

You should, however, be prepared to spend some time finding that perfect position. While there are a lot of jobs available, the positions often require specific talents and experience. If you keep the faith and continue your search, you’ll be certain to find the perfect match.

About the Author:

Jobs Assistance How Important is Change Management in your Organization

If you are looking at information technology as a possible career path, or if you’re already working in the field, you probably already know that jobs in this area are growing at a pace that overshadows every other area.
