A little preparation combined with some mental reinforcement can make this transition in life a little easier and possibly more rewarding.

Unfortunately, when there are layoffs it’s usually more than a few people, and they may possess the same job skills and background as you. This makes for heavier competition. More competition can easily translate to a longer job search and fewer opportunities.

There are steps you can take to lessen the pain of unemployment and make your job search more productive. Let’s take a look at some of the steps you can take, everything from polishing your resume, to clearing your head of negative thinking.

There’s not always warning of upcoming layoffs. Sure there can be signs, like an increase in the stress level, or a long-term drop in production. Sometimes the company is prepared for the rollercoaster ride in business, but let the truth be known, not even the company president knows for sure when those layoffs will happen.

Sometimes there are other indicators that the office or factory is on a downward spiral. Behavior changes in management is one example. Managers can turn to micro managing in an attempt to gain more control over their situation. Sometimes they turn to micro managing just to appear to be busy and needed, in an attempt to ward off their own potential layoff.

What should you do when you see those warning signs? First things first, you should pull out your resume and start working on your updates. Think about the accomplishments you have experienced over the years, how you’ve made yourself a valuable employee. Capture qualities like attendance, promptness, and willingness to learn.

Remember to focus some attention on your thinking and beliefs. There are many tools and methods that you can learn that will help you deal with the stress of a layoff. Anything you can do to empower yourself will serve you in your job search and interviewing process. Techniques such as EFT or Reiki Energy Healing can help you clear your mind and release negative thinking.

You can turn around the negative aspect of a job layoff and turn it into a new opportunity. If you get stuck working on that resume, put it down for a minute and clear your mind. Use those tools and skills you have developed in personal power to release and restructure your thinking. Turning a job layoff into a new opportunity can open doors you never new existed.

About the Author:

Author Estee Taschereau is a Personal Transformation Coach and Intuitive Counselor.
