There are numerous acceptable reasons for gaps in between jobs, such as traveling, self employment and education. The important thing to remember is not to feel the need to cover anything up in a resume or an application that is regarding a job loss, and especially not to tell a “white lie.”

It is typical to just stick to spotlighting what needs to be, and paying no attention to what is unnecessary, when interviewing or filling out an application. Do not overlook any amount of time spent unemployed, no matter how small a time frame it may be. When you are submitting a resume or application, these are legal forms that you are claiming to be true, leaving out information would be dishonest. When explaining previous job loss, be sure to make sure the information matched up with what is on your resume and application.

Be open and honest. Do not attempt a run-around explanation, or you are sure to be terminated later when it is discovered that you were not honest. Go Into Every Detail. Unemployment is part of everyone’s career at least once. You should ideally include every single job you have done. While explaining your past job loss to your present interviewer, support your stance with referrals and recommendations that good networking brings.

When explaining your past job loss, display your initiative – note that while you were out of work, you learned to do lots of different things. This way, you get a chance to subtly eliminate the focus on the fact that you lost your job, and highlight your willingness to deliver quality work. This also puts you across as a person who is passionate about your work and is genuinely interested in going that extra mile.

It also helps to highlight your expertise in certain skills, such as accounting and organizing. This opens up new scope for you and the interviewer’s perspective of you. Focus on what is and not on what is not there. Analyze your skills and list them. Don’t be afraid to highlight your accomplishments. The void may be there, but you can still convert it into your advantage.

About the Author:

If you are thinking of beefing up on your business skills, think of learning more about six sigma training.
