The internet is loaded with real business opportunities, but in order to take advantage of these, one must be savvy enough to avoid the very plentiful scams that threaten to drown them out. Those looking to make money on the internet will probably have come across advertisements for things like cash gifting, MLM, and network marketing. So what do these terms mean, and how do I determine if there are differences in cash gifting, MLM, and network marketing?

First, we have MLM, or multi-level marketing. This is, in fact, identical to network marketing. In this case, a business recruits sales associates who do all the sales work for the company, selling directly to consumers. These associates only make money through sales commissions, although in some cases they also make one-time bonuses for bringing in new associates, occasionally even taking a cut from the new recruits’ sales themselves.

As an example to clear up any confusion, lets look at a cosmetics company. The company makes its money selling its product, and does so by hiring sales associates. These are independent people who are paid no salary, and instead take a cut from any sales they make. Before selling, however, they are required to go through training, and must pay for various supplies and startup materials. They expect to recover these fees through their sales.

By charging these fixed costs, the company guarantees it will not lose money on associates who take the training and supplies, but never actually make any sales. Its a sound business strategy in general, but beware companies who charge very high startup fees, because then it can be very hard to earn them back through the percentage of sales that the associate would receive.

Even less desirable is the business which encourages sales associates to make most, if not all, their money off of recruiting new people. These are called cash gifting businesses, and are rarely worth getting into. New recruits are charged very high fees, and are then expected to get their money back from cuts of the fees that their recruits pay.

A good example of a business with this type of structure is a cash gifting operation. For example, in a $100 cash gifting program, you would pay $100 to join and then earn $100 for every new person you recruit to the program. This type of transaction is legal, just as giving a cash gift to family member is legal. However, it is best to be wary of this type of operation, as this business model is unsustainable for obvious reasons.

Thus, when looking into any of these types of businesses, it is critical to exactly what the starting fees are. In addition, one must examine, and get straight answers about, how quickly they can earn back these fees and make the desired profit level. As far as taking these types of businesses apart that we’ve discussed here today, the core difference is in their fees. A good business has reasonable and low fees. A bad business has unreasonable, high fees that will be hard to recoup.

These business strategies, MLM and network marketing, are sound methods of marketing and selling a product to consumers through associates. However, beware poorly organized companies which use high starting fees to make their money, and encourage high recruitment levels as a primary way to earn money. So, to determine whether a business is MLM, network marketing, or cash gifting, simply look at the fees!
