Or perhaps it is something as simple as the CDs in the console, the change in the ashtray, or the ice-scraper in the glovebox. The last thing you feel like doing is calling the police over something so small. So how do you stop these ‘wannabee’ robbers before they move on to bigger things like stealing your entire car? Because, let’s face it; it’s just flat-out annoying! Once they know they can do it once, chances are they’ll be back for more at a later time.

Well, I suppose you could get a pit bull and hope the thief isn’t carrying a steak in his back pocket. Motion detector lights could also be a possible deterrent, since most criminals prefer to do their dirty work at night. However, that can also be an annoyance when a stray cat sets it off in the middle of the night, flooding your house with light.

It has been said, ‘Opportunity makes a thief’. Therefore, one of the simplest things you can do is try to eliminate the opportunity. Keep things in your car out of sight (i.e. in the trunk, under the seats). In your home always keep doors and windows locked. Install a deadbolt lock on your exterior doors. Make sure that the doors are well-fitted in their frames. Basement windows should be secure and if possible have a lock on the inside door to the basement. Secure sliding doors by placing a broomstick in the track. Don’t leave a spare key anywhere outside. Have a safe in your home for all your valuables, such as jewelry, extra cash, etc. Don’t leave anything expensive just lying around within view of any windows. Any shrubs or bushes near the house should be kept neatly trimmed so as not to conceal burglars.

If you’re going to be away for awhile, make sure that the mail will be held. Have a neighbor pick up any newspapers and leave a trashcan out on trash pick-up day. A trusted friend can help by keeping the lawn mowed and parking occasionally outside your home to give the appearance of someone regularly there. You can also install a timer on various lights throughout your house to come on at certain hours.

One of the most popular security measures is a security camera -even a fake security camera can thwart the most hardened thief. You want to make sure it is plainly visible and aimed at the problem areas – your car, garage, back door (wherever they can get in). Place a sign prominently in your yard letting passersby that you have video surveillance. Cameras should also be out of reach and sturdy so that they cannot be knocked down by potential thieves.

In general thieves prefer an easy target. So whatever you decide to do to make your home safer, make it very hard for them to take the risk with you. Your home is a refuge, a place of warmth, love, and memories. Don’t let someone else take that away from you.

About the Author:

Security systems can be rather expensive.
