At its most basic level, email marketing can be described as touching your intended audience by using email. This particular method should be thought of in the same way as the use of direct postal mail, telemarketing, selling in person, websites, radio, and television. The reality is that email can be employed hand-in-hand with any or all of the above methods with often remarkable results.<\/p>\n

The idea behind email marketing is basically to get your message out to those individuals who have “raised their hand” and expressed an interest in what you have to say. By “raised their hand”, we mean that the person has initiated the relationship<\/a> by clicking on a link that adds their email address to your email list. In the case of a double opt-in list, the recipient also must confirm the email subscription by clicking on a separate link inside an email that is sent specifically to their email address for the purpose of confirming that only those who want to be on the list actually are.<\/p>\n

Therefore, email marketing does not automatically mean “spam”. Spam is unwanted commercial email. Reputable email marketers are not spammers because the recipient specifically requests to be added to the list, and every email will contain a method to easily unsubscribe from the list.<\/p>\n

What about the content of email marketing communications?<\/p>\n

Generally, email marketing will include the following:<\/p>\n

News<\/a> relevant to your industry or subject area. If you are marketing to professional dog<\/a> trainers, you may want to inform your readers about lawsuits, new techniques, and the like. By providing relevant information and helpful interpretation of it, you will eventually become a trusted advisor to your readers.<\/p>\n

Tips and tricks. A method often employed is to give some level of basic education. A good use of this technique would be to send out an email course on how to grow roses. Alternatively, you might speak to one problem that aspiring rose growers often deal with.<\/p>\n

Sales messages. Of course, this is why marketers maintain email lists… to sell something! What exactly you are encouraging your reader to do is going to vary depending on your circumstances. You might not always be asking your reader to part with their money, but you will normally be asking them to move farther down the sales funnel.<\/p>\n

Here are some examples:<\/p>\n

* Visit a sales page (your own or another marketers’)<\/p>\n

* Pick up the phone and call for more information<\/p>\n

* Sign up for free teleseminar<\/p>\n

Email marketing messages can either be “broadcast” message or “sequential” messages. The sequential messages are often called “autoresponders” because the process for adding a reader is automatic, and the system keeps track of which messages get sent when.<\/p>\n
