Computer Viruses

by Fred Roe

Over the past month, the number of virus infections in the United States has skyrocketed. I manage a computer repair shop in Atlanta Georgia and I’ve seen tons of virus infections over the last month, more than I’ve seen in twenty years of business.

Many of our clients were already using virus protection software, however some of the new strains of computer viruses are completely bypassing their software and installing themselves. Why not follow the following practical hints on exactly how to avoid getting your computer infected in the first place?

First off, most computer infections come from email programs. Be very careful what files you receive, and do not click on them. Some of them are pretty sneaky, however when in doubt, don’t open.

Secondly, you’ll have to take note of which websites you are visiting. By visiting unreputable websites, you can have to be very careful. Some nefarious hackers have installed very innocent looking script on websites whose sole purpose is infecting your computer.

Third, use a web browser other than Microsoft Internet Explorer. I personally highly recommend Mozilla Firefox. It’s a great program that is very customizable and is a lot less likely to cause infection. Because more people use Internet Explorer, most of the hackers like to go after those users rather than the less popular Firefox.

Fourth, be careful what you download. Many sites that allow you to download illegal copies of software could infect you with viruses. Obviously if they are promoting the illegal downloading of software, they are much more likely to cause you problems with nasty viruses.

You may want to consider a better virus program. Some virus protection programs are very different than others. Do a search on c-net to get reviews of the most popular virus protection programs. Many of our customers swear by products like Avast.

By simply being a little more paranoid with your computer as well as avoiding problem spots as mentioned above you should be able to avoid most computer virus issues. Good Luck, and stay virus free.

About the Author:

Atlanta Laptop Repairs company Nerds Next Door is Atlanta’s number one on-site computer repair company.
