It has got qualities that are remarkably expressive. It is quite important to understand the uses of a color.’Color’ is a general term that applies to all objects-white, black, violet, blue, green, yellow, orange and red and to all of its combinations.

Hue is the perfect word that can suit to refer to the pure colors of the spectrum. Every known color can be described in terms of value and hue. Moreover, several physical phenomena as well as psychological effects collectively affect the way we perceive the color.

‘Value’ is the term used to describe the darkness or lightness of a color. It indeed is a vital for an artist or a designer in the way it designs the spatial illusions. The contrast of a value isolates the objects in the space, while the value gradation suggests contour and mass of the contiguous surface.

Hue is a relative word used for the pure colors of a spectrum that are usually referred as red, yellow, orange, blue, violet, green that do appear in the rainbow or a hue. In fact, all the existing hues can be mixed and combined from the three fundamental hues called as the primaries. The speculative resultant will be black when all the primary pigments are mixed with each other. Therefore the pigment mixture often is called as subtractive mixture.

These basic colors involve three hues that can be theoretically mixed with the other hues. Yellow, blue and red constitute Painter primaries, yellow, cyan and magenta constitute Printer Primaries; and green, blue and red constitute Light primaries.

Complements are the color variants that contradict one another in the circle of hues. When the complements happen to mix with another in the paint, the resultant mixture dulls or de-saturates the hues. Opposite pairs, as such, can also be found based on the relative coolness and warmth. The contrast of the hue’s warmth and coolness can make the image to advance or even recede in appearance. For instance, take the example of a painting belonging to the 15th century. The reds of the son’s cap and that of the man’s the placement of the hues so as to make the things match very close.

Few of the color effects occur in only in the brain and eye of the viewer and not the physical components of the pigments or light waves. The illusions are very dominant however and have got a tremendous impact on our reflection to the color.

When tiny particles of various colors are mixed, optical mixture occurs; this kind of combination differs from the pigment mixture based on the light primaries. Optical mixture, however, vary from a light mixture where the primaries will combine to white, and from the pigment combination the primaries combine to black.

Optical mixture is experienced when examining many textiles. It can also be perceived in natural objects, color television, and printed color pictures.

About the Author:

For great tips check out the art forums!
