While most of the mail that you receive is from companies that you&#8217;ve dealt with for years, not all mail that you receive is on the up and up.  You might get bills or invitations to participate in offers based on your hard-won <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meyouworld.net\/EG\/tag\/Credit_Cards.html\" class=\"kblinker\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"More about Credit &raquo;\">credit<\/a> rating.  Thieves also target financially stable individuals with offers that look official but are really just an attempt to obtain your personal details.<\/p>\n<p>You can reduce the chances of your falling for a scheme like this by keeping a close watch on the kinds of mail you receive and when.  You can also switch to online statements where possible thereby reducing the amount of mail in your mailbox.<\/p>\n<p>Many common bills that you receive &#8211; utilities, telephone, regular credit card statement  &#8211; usually have your contact details displayed on them.  This is the kind of information that an identity theif looks for.<\/p>\n<p>The savvy consumer can also prevent identity theft by keeping a watchful eye on bank statements that come through the mail. These often include your name, address, bank name, contact information, account number and even type of account.<\/p>\n<p>Did you know that some employers would put your social security number on your pay stub just for filing purposes? To help prevent identity theft, keep these papers close to you so they do not fall into they wrong hands &#8212; or shred them to guard against identity theft.<\/p>\n<p>But how do these prospective thieves get the goods on you?  What techniques do they use to gather the kind of personal information that will make you a victim of identity theft?  According to the experts who fight against identity theft, all criminals need is a pair of gloves and a flashlight.<\/p>\n<p>Many people throw out papers in the garbage, thinking no one would touch them amongst the food scraps. Think again.
