Unfortunately, the people who are victims of identity theft are often help responsible for debts and other problems created. This is one of the reasons you need to take steps to protect yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, we should all recognize the various forms of identity theft and how they occur in order to know how to prevent it from happening. There are many tips for protection against identity theft that we can easily follow such as checking our credit ratings regularly and keeping an eye on our bills for any unusual activity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Never give private information to anyone you don&#8217;t know and trust<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Documents that contain any personal details should be shredded before being thrown away and this can include anything from bank statements to credit card offers<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Social security cards and numbers are extremely important as a person can easily work in someone else&#8217;s name fraudulently. Never have a social security or driver&#8217;s license number printed on a check book, instead memorize the numbers<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Never freely carry around important documentation and numbers as they could easily be stolen<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Get an unlisted number so you are not in the phone book<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Cancel and destroy any cards that are not used<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; If you lose your purse or wallet, or it&#8217;s stolen, contact all financial institutions that you deal with<\/p>\n<p>Other things you can do to help prevent identity theft include keeping your important documents locked in a safe at home. Never give out personal information to telemarketers or unsolicited email senders. When you&#8217;re traveling, make a copy of your identification and leave it with someone you can contact in case the originals are lost or stolen.<\/p>\n<p>Protecting Yourself Against Identity Theft Online<\/p>\n<p>Protecting yourself on the internet isn&#8217;t complicated. Make sure you have a current antivirus and spyware scanner on your computer, and keep them updated. Change your passwords on a regular basis and make sure they&#8217;re hard to guess. Ideally you should use a combination of letters, number and symbols. Never respond to emails asking for private information such as credit card details or account information.
