Cates

There are lessons that we learn as we go. Our mothers could have told us – but we would neither have believed them nor paid attention. Instead, they let us learn on our own.

In that spirit, let me share a few things I’ve learned about teleseminars.

1. Although your audience cannot actually see you sitting there with your bad hair day and inappropriate clothing, they do sense your cheerfulness and enthusiasm. So, even if you are the only one in the room, make sure you get animated and smile a lot allowing your audience to pick up on this.

2. You’re talking to “dead air” when you mute the line. This generally comes as a bit of a shock to most people on their first teleseminar. Many timesI have heard them unmute and then umnute again simply to make sure there is still someone out there listening to them. It’s lonely out there when you think you are all by yourself. However, trust me, just because you cannot hear them breathing does not mean they are not there.

3. Allow for the fact that around half of those who have registered will not actually show. If they have signed up for a free call, they had good intentions but as we all know, things crop up and something as simple as getting caught up in a traffic jam can put our plans out of our minds. It is, therefore, essential for you as the organizer to remind the people about the call, over and over again if necessary. Then hope for the best and get on with the show.

4. You need to do the follow-up work before the call. After the call you are stoked and pumped from the call – the last thing you want to do is take care of details! But the audio needs editing, the registration page has to change, email reminders have to go out, the transcript needs editing, you need to set up the product in the shopping system, etc. There is just a lot to do! And if you haven’t done most of it ahead of time, you’ll spend more time after the call than you did before. And that dilutes the excitement and leaves you less time to enjoy the moment.

5. It takes many hands to do a teleseminar so unless you have three pairs of hands or find yourself in the unlikely situation that you are just so talented you can do it all on your own, you can help yourself by asking for assistance from others. Get someone to follow the call outline and check the recording levels and someone else to IM your guests, field the questions coming in by email and ask the questions on behalf of your callers. Then you will be left with the task of providing an informative call and keeping an eye on the clock.

Consider yourself forewarned about these lessons. But I’ll know you weren’t listening when on your next teleseminar you keep unmuting the line and saying ‘Hello – anyone out there?’

About the Author:

Pick up your copy of 17 Reasons to Host A Teleseminar today.
