Stun guns, when operated safely and correctly, are a great way to protect oneself and loved ones from attackers. On the other hand, they can be a hazard to one’s own safety if appropriate measures to handling it are not taken.<\/p>\n

A stun gun is designed to draw electric charge from a battery and deliver it to the attacker through two metal prongs usually located towards the top. This current interferes with the nervous system of the attacker by preventing the signals between brain and muscles from passing through. This results in a temporary paralysis, or inability to move properly.<\/p>\n

Listed below are some important safety precautions to keep in mind:<\/p>\n

Hold the gun steadily before you leave your vehicle, or place of shelter\/hiding.<\/p>\n

Turn the gun on, but do not touch the trigger until you are actually ready to use the stun gun.<\/p>\n

Always hold the stun gun out and away from you as even a touch from the prongs could possibly disable you.<\/p>\n

Target the hip and shoulder with the stun gun as the fastest way to disable the attacker.<\/p>\n

Hold the trigger down and keep the stun gun in contact with the attacker until he\/she is down. Do not pull away the stun gun after an initial shock.<\/p>\n

Test the stun gun frequently to make sure that it is in good working order.<\/p>\n

Keep extra batteries in your car or somewhere accessible should you even need to use them. Make sure that you keep the batteries charged at all times.<\/p>\n

Ask a local law enforcement agency about the legality of carrying a stun gun in your city or state before you acquire it.<\/p>\n

Touch the prongs to something metallic after each use to eliminate any charge left on them. Make sure that you turn the gun off before touching the prongs to something metallic.<\/p>\n

Avoid leaving the stun gun under your car seat, as a stray charge in suitable conditions can start a fire in the gas tank.<\/p>\n
