Why do people steal from vending machines? There are all sorts of reasons from just thinking it really isn’t stealing to looking for an easy way to get their hands on some cash. While there is quite a difference between getting a soda for free and walking off with all the merchandise and money, both are forms of stealing from a vending machine. Both of them will end up costing the owner of it money in the long run.

People of all ages seem to think it is acceptable to steal from vending machines. Some young children learn this behavior from their parents. Others engage in it with their friends and there are adults out there that are just as guilty of it. I think it is ironic that the majority of these people will tell you they personally think it is wrong to steal. They just don’t see what they are doing at the vending machine as stealing.

Just because there isn’t a person around to make you responsible for your actions doesn’t make it right. Many vending machine owners are tired of getting ripped off. You may be on a hidden surveillance camera and therefore someone is watching your actions. Too many people try to convince themselves that stealing from a vending machine is no big deal. Yet if you have to talk yourself into it that way you really need to walk away from the urge to do so.

There are plenty of different ways in which individuals steal from vending machines. Some people have change on a string. They are able to put into the vending machine to count it and then to pull it back out again. Some will contact the owner of the vending machine and tell them they got ripped off a dollar. This many seem like a small thing again, but if you do it across town with quite a few vending machines that is a pocketful of money you didn’t really have to begin with.

These may be minor offenses, but still theft nonetheless. For the owners of vending machines, the real damage comes when people are stealing what is inside of them. They generally don’t have a way in but to break the machine apart. This can cost a great deal of money to repair. In some instances the vending machine must be replaced due to the amount of damage.

Of course generally they will also go as far as to steal the money that is in the vending machine as well. In many instances they will case it out for a while before they do so. They will learn the pattern of when the owner comes to refill it with supplies and to empty the money. They will then steal from it the day before when it should be at its fullest with dollars and coins inside of it.

Can you believe there are times when they go as far as to take the entire machine? That’s right; they load it up and take off with it. They know that law enforcement may be looking for it so they will take what is inside and then sale the shell of it. If they have damaged it to get the contents though they may just leave it somewhere.

Stealing from a vending machine is theft pure and simple. It doesn’t matter which one of these categories that the issue falls under. You may get away with it, but hopefully your conscious will get the best of you. Some people do it for their own personal gain or for a thrill. However, there are legal repercussions to this type of theft and it really isn’t worth the trouble you will get yourself into.
