by Daniel Handler

In recent years, it has become fashionable to ask guest speakers to address delegates at conferences, functions, team building events and business meetings. It is generally hoped that they would inspire their listeners and motivate them to better themselves, examine their own attitudes and resolve to embrace new values. Speakers come from many different walks of life, but sports speakers seem to be the most popular.

Successful sports speakers and athletes are in a class all of their own. They are the essence of shared achievement because when an athlete triumphs, his family, his community and his country share in the victory. They nurture common pride and they play a very important role in welding diverse groups of people into a new group with a common passion. In short, successful athletes are heroes of the community.

There is much to admire in successful athletes. Regardless of the discipline, they all share some common character traits without which it would be impossible to achieve the pinnacle of achievement. They are disciplined and the work extremely hard. They constantly strive to do better and never accept failure as a debilitating event. Sports heroes live clean lives because they have to, they are healthy and everything that they do is geared towards achieving their goals.

Cynics argue that sportspeople have no message to convey because they simply took advantage of their god given talent and that their message is therefore irrelevant to most other people. However, nothing can be further from the truth. The best attributes of successful athletes will ensure success in any field. By learning from the intense dedication of sports speakers, ordinary people can realize that, by applying the same principle, they too can achieve the pinnacle of their own field.

Another reason why athletes are such popular public speakers is the fact that they are used to be in the public eye. They are not bashful and they regularly have to express their opinions in public. Of course, not all super athletes speak well but even their innate shortcomings in this area seem to endear them to their audiences all the more. Added to this is the fact that most ordinary people revel in meeting high achievers.

Busy sportspeople certainly do not have the time to cope with all the demands upon their time and therefore most of them use agents to represent them. Naturally, agents need to be paid and the fees for an appearance by a prominent sports celebrity are sometimes very high, attracting criticism from some quarters. What these critics often neglect to take into account is that most of these sports heroes spend a considerable amount of time contributing to their communities and supporting charities.

Perhaps the biggest advantage in asking a sports hero to address an event is the fact that they have general appeal. Their support base is not limited to specific target groups, a limitation experienced by most other categories of public speakers. Sports achievers have an extremely diverse base of support and they are able to bring their message across to people from just about any demographic definition.

In a shallow world where celebrity status seems to have everything to do with looks, scandals, parties and drugs, sports heroes stand out as a shining example of wholesome living. They are living example of what every human can achieve with dedication and discipline and that is the main reason why sports speakers are so popular.
