Does the world need another web browser? Google thought so and surprised the world with the announcement and simultaneous release of its new web browser “Chrome”.

Because the features and benefits of Chrome tend to be complex, Google created their own “comic book” style features guide as well as gave a live demonstration of their product during the press conference to announce the product.

The central idea of Google’s Chrome browser was to build a browser that runs today’s and tomorrow’s web applications faster, with fewer crashes, than either Microsoft’s Internet Explorer or Mozilla’s Firefox browsers. Given that Google employees spend most of their work day doing work in a browser; it makes sense that they were motivated to create a browser that runs web applications quickly without crashing. No doubt, today’s slower and less stable browsers must have been a problem for their productivity.

To help achieve the goal of stability, Google built Chrome from the ground up so that each browser tab would run in an individual process within the operating system. This is similar to how desktop applications work and means that Chrome was built to be more stable. Having each tab be an individual process means that work you are doing in a web application or on a web page in one tab, will not cause problems for the work you are doing in a different tab. This approach circumvents the performance problems and crashes which happen in Firefox or Internet Explorer where a bug in the web app or website can affect all the open tabs in the browser. Anyone who has ever lost work in progress due to a random crash or hang in their web browser will certainly appreciate this feature in Chrome.

The new tab system in the Google Chrome browser has allowed Google to easily implement new features. One of the more cool features is the option to separate an existing tab into a new window, simply by grabbing and dragging that tab out of the current browser window.

Another important fact about Google’s Chrome browser is that the source code is available to software developers worldwide. Making the source code available as “open source” means that we’ll see programmers around the world developing custom modifications and additions to Chrome faster and in more innovative ways than Google could have managed on its own.

One of the controversies surrounding Google’s Chrome is the fact that Google released the browser early in what they are calling a “beta”. With Chrome’s version number standing at 0.2, some early adopters questioned Google’s decision to release the software so early and were indeed expecting a more finished product.

A simple way to think about how Chrome differs from existing browsers is to understand that “Chrome was built to run web applications quickly and well” while older browsers like “Internet Explorer and Firefox were built to display HTML quickly and well”.

With more people running web applications every day, it’s clear that running web applications quickly and without crashing is important. Clearly Google believes that point of view and spent the time and money to build the Chrome browser just for that purpose.

The signs are everywhere tempting you to buy the winning lottery ticket and claim your millions. Even if you never actually buy a ticket you are invited to dream of what you might do if you were to win. This made me wonder how our lottery compared with others around the world.

What I have found most people around the world, albeit state, national or even the UK lottery, is that most players have a system to select the numbers that are going to win them the latest jackpot. When purchasing their lottery tickets most people will use birthdays, anniversaries, dates that (in their mind) are those that their lucky star will select for them, and only them, to have the proverbial \”Golden Ticket\”. Here in the US, for example, there has been a surge of selections of the same grouping of numbers, found in the popular television show LOST 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42. If these are the numbers that are selected, I would hate to see the mass panic that would ensue having to split the winnings 18 million ways. For all of my research, I wasn’t able to find the same type of pattern in number selection in the UK, however, there are many differences as to how their national lottery is played as compared to our state lotteries.

The largest difference that I can find between the American lottery system and that of the National Lottery found in the UK is that within the UK you can select your numbers online and play online daily. This is a far cry from what we have in the US today where you have to patronize your local convenience, grocery, or liquor store to invest your earnings in what will certainly be the last lottery ticket you will ever need to purchase. In the UK, not only can you track the numbers you have played in the past online, you can select those numbers over and over again, to play daily, and see if you can win big. You have a capability of simply imputing your numbers in a box on the National Lottery website to see how they compare with the UK lotto results. It appears as if the Europeans are decades ahead in their lottery ticket purchase, selection and tracking process.

Many Americas view the lottery as an evil to be avoided. Thus the attitude of making it difficult to participate in might be the reason for the antiquated system for buying tickets. Barriers to participation are also barriers to the benefit the lottery gives to revitalization of a lagging economy.

America could have a National Lottery website that is governed by its citizens. Millions could become available by giving just pennies per ticket to causes we all support. This could be done without altering what individual states do with their lotteries.

Megabuck dreams held in our pocket or stuffed into our purse to be lost in the shuffle of everyday life is a truly American experience. This excitement of loosing the winning ticket is no longer possible in Europe where a National Lottery played online at the click of a mouse button offering the player as much security as cyberspace can offer.
