My Thoughts After 24 Hours With Google Chrome

Watch out Mozilla and Microsoft, Google is entering the fray with it’s new internet browser Chrome. Downloadable as of Tuesday September 2nd, 2008 in beta format, there have already been millions of downloads in the first week.

Just so we can be clear because the browser is in it’s first version, and is a beta version, the program does have some faults. It has some lock up issues, and things don’t always work as intuitvely as one would think.

All in all the program is pretty good for a first attempt at making a browser.

As with all things Google, the application is simple and light. The reason why google trumped Yahoo and other search engines is because their interface was very uncluttered, and it just flat out worked better. The same can be said about Google Chrome.

Overall, after using Chrome for about 24 hours, I find the application to be very sleek, uncluttered, and lightweight. It seems like it takes up less of the computer power in simple browsing. One common complaint about Internet Explorer is that it can be a resource hog, taking up tons and tons of memory as well as processing power. Firefox is faster than IE, and Opera which very few people use is the fastest of them all. Chrome is probably on the leading edge, faster than Firefox, and only gets rivaled by the beta version of IE8.

Another thing I noticed is the footprint is smaller. I opened up one tab with a page with no graphics in IE only to have it use up over 60MB of memory, Firefox took up around 20MB, and Chrome was running around 14MB. That means there’s less overhead. When dealing in multiple tabs this can make a huge difference.

One benefit to Google Chrome that Internet Explorer doesn’t have is the ability to add plug-ins. That’s my favorite part about Firefox, I can completely customize my browsing experience with plenty of add-ons. At any one time I’ve used dozens of add ons. Chrome is allowing add-ons as well. But, time will tell if the browser becomes popular enough to persuade developers to develop new innovative apps.

One thing that is very annoying is waiting while updating/viewing pages. Chrome does a great job of creating a very fast browser with even less lag than other previous speed demons like Firefox.

Google has a grand scheme for all of this. They want to make almost all applications work within a browser. So, that you come home, open up Chrome, and do 99% of your computer time within the browser, whether that be checking your email, creating spreadsheets, or surfing the internet. Chrome is built from the ground-up to be a central player in this plan.

I’m impressed with this opening effort from Google. With a few minor fixes and tweaks, Google should have themselves a pretty good online competitor. I’m still going to stick with Firefox for now, but I’ll keep an eye on Chrome to see where Google goes with it. Regardless however, competition is good. Chrome should help push Microsoft and Mozilla to continue innovating and moving forward, which helps all internet users.

If you’ve recently tried to upgrade to a new version of Microsoft Office, you might be astounded by the price that it commands. It can cost over $400 for the professional version. Quite a pretty penny to pay.

Rather than paying Microsoft’s rather hefty fees, you might be more interested in looking at some of the alternatives that are out there.

One very reasonable alternative would be Microsoft’s own Works package. Essentially an entry-level office productivity suite that has older versions of Microsofts own products. For instance Microsoft Works 2006 has Microsoft Word 2002 in it. You’ll find that many new computers have Microsoft Works installed on it automatically. However, you can purchase the software package for under $50. And it is quite functional.

Many people are being drawn to the alternative of Open Office. Open Office is something truly revolutionary. It’s been created by developers as Open Source software. What that means is that programming is not done by a corporation for profit, but rather by independent programmers from around the world.

Many users have found that Open Office is a good alternative to Microsoft’s Office products. It offers free alternative versions to Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access. And the best part is that it’s completely free. There is no charge for using Open Office, it remains free for all users whether personal or corporate. It remains very compatible with most versions of Microsoft Office. Which means that if you create a document in Open Office and mail it to a friend or coworker with Microsoft Office that the document will open fine for them, and vice versa. However, many users have complained that Access isn’t very forgiving of the differences between the programs.

My personal favorite however is Google Documents. When you log in to your Google account, you get access to Google Documents, where you can create word documents, excel documents very similar to how it works in Microsoft Office.

If you’ve ever had a hard drive go bad, you’ll like the fact that Google Documents is web based. Which means that all of your documents are saved online. That means that Google has all of the files on their servers, which means they are backed up by all of the power of Google.

Also with Google documents it’s very easy to share and co-edit the same documents right online. We use Google documents almost exclusively in our office, and love how easy it is to collaborate on projects together.

Even though Microsoft Office is the leader in office productivity suites, there are cheaper alternatives. It’s possible to create compatible documents for others and save money at the same time.

Twitter is a website that enables you to send out little “micro-blogs” of 140 characters or less to anyone that’s following you (that’s like friends in Facebook). You can let people know what you’re doing at any time, and this can be pretty cool. These messages can be business or personal, and should be both.

For you internet marketers, obviously you’re going to want some of your “tweets” to be concerning your business. For example, if you post a new Squidoo lens, tweet it. If you learn about a cool new website, let your followers know.

At the same time, if you just post business-related activities, people are going to think that’s all you care about and you’re going to lose them. There’s a reason that web 2.0 is called “social networking”. It’s because you need to be “social”, talk about nothing or everything, and let people know who you are. I know, many people are totally wrapped up in their business, to the exclusion of pretty much anything else (including a life), but you need to find something!

Maybe you like to play the piano, or read romance novels. Tell people about the good ones! Maybe you’re a Packers fan and you can’t believe Brett Favre is wearing a Jets uniform. Here are 7 things I do to build my twitter empire in the most efficient way possible.

1. Follow a lot of people. Here’s how I did that: I found someone that was already on Twitter that had similar interests as me, social and attraction marketing, and started following everyone he was following. When I got up to 2000, Twitter wouldn’t let me follow any more, and I assume they have a limit. However, I have seen people that are following more than 2000, so there must be some kind of criteria, probably involving how many are following you. Anyway, if you follow enough people, a bunch of them are going to follow you back. When they do, send them a tweet with a link to your blog.

2. When someone follows you, follow them back. Pretty soon, people will start to follow you that you didn’t follow in the first place. (They probably found you the same way you got started). When they follow you, follow them and send a similar message to them as you did above. If you’re already at 2000 people, go in and delete a few that aren’t following you. I get rid of the ones that don’t have a picture, because they probably aren’t too serious about Twitter. Which leads to point 3.

3. Personalize your site. Add your picture. Write about yourself, and post a background image. Put your blog or website link on it. Remember, you need to be social – even if you’re not!

4. Tie your twitter account in with your Facebook account. You do have a Facebook account, right? If not, shame on you! Go get one! This kills 2 birds with one stone: when you post something to twitter, it automatically updates what you are doing on Facebook.

5. Try out twhirl. This is a desktop application that displays tweets from others without having to be on the twitter site. You can also post your own tweets there, and more. What I like about this program is that it has a url shortener built into it. If you want to post a long link in one of your tweets, you might run out of space because you can only have posts of 140 characters or less. Using twhirl, you can enter the url into a box and click “shorten” and it will give you a short little link that you can put in your post. Download twhirl at twhirl.com.

6. Try twitterfeed if you’re a blogger. Twitterfeed automatically tweets any new posts that you make to your blog, and if you’re connected, to Facebook. It works by monitoring your RSS feed periodically for new posts, and if it sees any it sends out a tweet. Saves you time and having to remember. You can set it up for free at twitterfeed.com

7. Register your twitter username at ezinearticles.com. In your profile, you can enter your twitter info, and when one of your articles gets approved it will automatically send out a tweet. This is good, because sometimes by the time it gets approved you’ll forget to post it on twitter.
