Adobe Illustrator: Just How Difficult Is It To Learn?

New users to Adobe Illustrator often complain that they find the program “fiddly” and frustrating. When we run Adobe training courses, we recognise that part of our job is rid people of this perception of Illustrator as a difficult program to use. We have identified three main elements to making people aware that Illustrator is no more difficult or frustrating than any other program.

Firstly, we point out to people that they must be on the right tool in order to carry out a given operation. Secondly, we teach them to observe and interpret the rich visual feedback provided by the program as you carry out various operations. Thirdly, we always remind new users of the ease with which you can revert your drawing back to a state prior to the point where something has gone wrong.

Illustrator beginners will often hit a roadblock where they are unable to carry out a certain operation because Illustrator will not permit it at that point in time or under the current circumstances. For example, they might want to change the size of an object and they end up rotating or moving it around the page instead.

If your whole drawing has gone seriously wrong, perhaps the easiest thing to do is to take it on the chin and choose the Revert command from the File menu. This is like saying “OK, I give up. This isn’t working!” File – Revert will discard every change you have made to the file since the last time you saved it and can be a very useful way of avoiding unnecessary frustration.

Another thing that new users do is attempt to modify elements in their drawing without clicking on the Selection tool first. One example might be they draw a shape using, say, the Polygon tool and then, with the Polygon tool still active, they attempt to move or resize the polygon they have just drawn or click on the page to deselect the polygon. They then get annoyed and puzzled when tiny polygons keep appearing in their drawing or Illustrator’s shape dimension window keeps on popping up.

A simple way of avoiding this kind of problem is to keep an eye on the many visual clues that Illustrator gives you and, in particular, those that relate to the cursor. Let’s take an example. Say you are attempting to change the size of a circle, you can only carry out this operation if your cursor has changed to a diagonal line with an arrow at both ends thus showing you that have positioned the cursor precisely over one of the resize handles.

If you have just started using a program like Illustrator, it is to be expected that you will make mistakes: things may go a little wrong or even get completely screwed up. The main thing is develop the “Undo reflex”. For example, if you move an object by accident, don’t try to manually put it back where it was, just choose Undo from the Edit menu or use the keyboard shortcut Control-Z (Command-Z on a Macintosh). If you Undo too much, you can use the Redo command to take you forward again. (The keyboard shortcut for the Redo command is Control-Shift-Z.)

This problem is easy to avoid. Always make sure that you are on the right tool. Thus, if you wish to manipulate an existing object, you have to ensure that the Selection tool is highlighted. One of the first keyboard shortcuts that we teach delegates who attend our Illustrator training courses is that you can temporarily activate the Selection tool by just pressing the Control key (or the Command key if you are using a Mac).

Teaching Children To Write Poetry Is Fun

Children can learn to write poetry when they are shown the basics. It does not matter if you are a parent or a teacher. Here are 6 steps to get you started.

1. List of words. On the chalk board or on a piece of paper at home write down some words that rhyme. An example would be: night, kite, fight, scare, snare, mare, mile, smile etc. Help the kids arrange a couple of these words in a sentence.

2. Recitation. While the students are writing their sentences you can write some of your own and then read them out loud. Hearing words rhyme is different than saying them in your head. Have each of the children do this. There may be giggles which is normal.

3. The Bible. The Bible is the most widely read book in the world. It is written in prose and parts of it are quite beautiful. You can read parts of the Bible a loud and discuss why it is considered poetry. As an exercise you can have the children try to imitate some of the verses.

4. Poems about grandparents. Try having the children write poems about things and people they are very familiar with like grandparents. Other topics could be pets and toys. The idea is to help them identify with the subject matter for their poems.

5. Games to teach rhyming. Rhyming games can be used to teach children how to write poetry. You can read nursery rhymes to the kids and have them stomp and or clap their hands along with the rhythmic pattern. This will be loud but it is very effective.

6. Music. Play different musical selection and point out how the lyrics blend like the words in poems. There are often rhymes used. This will help the older kids become more interested in poetry when they realize that their favorite musical groups adhere to many forms of prose in their music.

Writing poetry is a fun activity and the kids will enjoy it. You need to start with simple rhyming schemes so the students can build confidence. You can use the Bible, games and music to further their understanding.

Employee Retention: Even More Important in Today’s Economy

There is nothing more frustrating that putting a lot of time, training and investment in a good employee only to have them quit and pursue a career elsewhere, so what do you do when you have a whole generation of workers who are known for this very practice?

In a full employment economy, Generation Y, the children of the Baby Boomers and the older Generation X’ers, are holding many, of the cards. If you are interested in making sure that you can keep the valuable workers that you train, there are several things that you need to be aware of.

First, Generation Y has more access to instantaneous communication than any other generation before it. This is a generation that grew up on things like the Internet and Instant Messenger, so they know how to get information, quickly.

Because of this, they also know cutting-edge news about their industry, what people are saying about it, and where those “better jobs” are. Therefore, if they’re not getting what they think they deserve where they are, they think nothing of going on to that better job offer.

In light of all of this, it is easy to see why you want to work on employee retention. Every new employee that you bring on uses a certain amount of resources and budget to train. They may need supplies, instructions and valuable training, and the more you invest in them, the less you want them to leave.

Nonetheless, this new job environment can mean a high turnover rate. And when that happens, the work environment can be much more stressful. This, in turn, can lead to a drop in productivity. In addition, if you are experiencing high turnover, you’re going to spend more time and money training, and there’s no guarantee that those new employees will stay put, either.

What can you do, then, to retain Generation Y employees? Simply, give them the best work environment that you can.
