For the past years, auto makers in Europe and the U.S. looked to China with hope, and with trepidation. They hoped the booming Chinese market would lift their worldwide sales. It did. They feared the Chinese would export cars en masse, swamping Europe and the U.S. with cheap vehicles. They did not.

Weapons of mass destruction: Nevertheless, red alert was sounded each time a Chinese car appeared at an auto show in Frankfurt, Geneva, Paris, or Detroit. weapons of mass destruction were deployed to ward off a Chinese invasion: Chinese cars were crashed, and grisly results were published, sometimes coincidentally timed adjacent to those auto shows. An insider close to the matter said: “If you have a lot of money, you can crash a lot of cars. There’s always one crash that looks real horrible. That’s the one you will see on YouTube.”

Another kind of crash: This year, there were no terrifying crashes of Chinese cars before the Paris Auto Show. Instead, Edmund’s AutoObserver reported from the show: “The era of Chinese car exports may have ended before it even began.”

Only two Chinese auto companies had appeared the show. One was Brilliance, BMW’s joint venture partner in China. The other was the French distributor of Shuanghuan Automobile. In previous years, they created hysteria. This year, they created yawns.

This time, no cars needed to be crashed. What did crash, were the auto markets. Auto sales in the U.S. were down 26 percent in September. In Japan, car sales are at their lowest level in more than thirty years. European markets are faring poorly.

Chinese new car exports sink: Chinese new car export numbers confirm this trend. August 2008 saw the first monthly drop over recent years in China’s car exports, largely due to slowing demand overseas. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), China exported 44,400 motor vehicles in August 2008, down 22.18 % from the previous month, or 11.29 % from a year earlier. Analysts think this trend will accelerate when the full impact of the market crash will be felt.

China had exported a total of 612,700 vehicles in 2007, up 78.95 % from a year before. For the first eight months of 2008, the total Chinese auto export value still rose 36.5 percent year-on-year. However, experts expect a decline for the rest of 2008, and a bloodbath in 2009.

Different story for parts: For auto parts, the picture is rosy. Sure, according to Gasgoo , Chinese parts makers who focused on delivering OEM parts to foreign new car manufacturers, saw their sales “drop significantly this year.”

Manufacturers who target the after-sales market are in much better shape, while many people prefer to maintain cars rather than buying new ones. The semi-official newspaper China Daily said: “The US and the European customers’ preference for China-made auto parts, which are more competitive in price, provides much better opportunities.

A good approach to decide upon the vehicle type is to go for a type which is just higher to the car type that is suitable for your purpose. This way you have a large enough buffer space to accommodate extras just in case. For example, if it’s a standard sized car that you need, it is preferable to choose a slightly higher full sized car.

Bloomberg reported that “China’s economy, the biggest contributor to global growth, expanded at the slowest pace in five years as the financial crisis cut demand for exports. Gross domestic product rose 9 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier.”

Economy got SARS?

To put it in a perspective anybody can relate to, Bloomberg said that “China’s expansion was the weakest since the severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, epidemic slashed growth in the second quarter of 2003.”

To old China hands, this conjures up some of the worst memories, when China came to a grinding halt for months, while everybody had to stay home and was allowed to go to the shop once a week with guns pointed at you, worn by soldiers in HAZMAT gear. Can’t get any worse than that.

Only 9% growth?

Politicians and business people all over the world would sell their first born for 9% growth. I take that back. A 9% rise of GDP would make the rest of the world scared that central bankers will raise interest rates to ward off inflation.

In reality, China simply goes from an inflationary, unsustainable, and unhealthy double digit growth to a solid level everybody would love.

Of course, export growth in China slowed a lot. It had to. Since the second half of 2007, the Chinese government made every attempt to dampen red-hot exports.

However:

– Retail sales in China rose 23.2 percent in September from a year earlier, matching the gain in August and close to the fastest pace in at least nine years.

– Urban disposable incomes for the first nine months rose 14.7 percent from a year earlier. Rural cash incomes climbed 19.6 percent. People have money.

– The formerly red-hot Chinese light vehicle market (which includes passenger vehicle and light commercial vehicle segments) is expected to slow in 2008, but it still will grow at very healthy rates. J.D. Power expects Chinese light vehicle sales to come in at 8.9 million units in 2008, which would be an increase of 9.7 % compared to 2007.

– Much of the decline in exports started long before the U.S. meltdown. The decline was triggered by the appreciation of the RMB, which was actually a reflection of the rapid depreciation of the USD which took place until July 2008. A falling Dollar makes Chinese goods more expensive. As gasgoo.com said, “for most local auto parts makers, the impact on exports brought by the demand slowdown of the global market triggered by the financial crisis will be less than that of the RMB appreciation.” It’s just that nobody took notice.

The Chinese stock market had seen it coming for a while.

The Chinese stock market crashed from 6000 at the start of 2008 to around 2000 now, > without causing worldwide hysteria. Since January, the Chinese stock market lost more than 60%. Did anybody come to the government for a bail-out?

The Dollar rises. The Yuan barely moves.

In case you have been looking, the USD took a sharp turn and appreciated dramatically since July. This should be reflected in the USD/CNY currency pair, shouldn’t it?

Have a look at the chart. Until July, the Yuan pretty much appreciated against the USD as the Euro did. The Dollar went down, the Euro and the Yuan went up.

But what happened when the USD started rising, starting in July? The USD/CNY rate barely budged. The EUR/CNY rate did move.

Writing attention grabbing headlines time after time, is the ultimate dream of every direct marketer; enjoying huge returns on investment the ultimate goal. Your skill in headline writing will determine whether you make a lot of money or very little. Striving to write the best headlines possible must be your absolute goal, which will lead to untold success, both personal and professional.

Below are some ideas that will help you craft the perfect headline for every direct marketing situation.

The questions you must ask yourself are:

Does your headline drive the prospect to want to buy now – or later?

Starting off with a yawn could make it seem as though even an extremely enticing product has no sense of urgency attached.

Read lots of direct-mail campaigns that come through your door, and especially those that drove you to buy straight away – study their headline copy. You’ll learn a huge amount.

Is the product or service valuable to them?

You know that what you’ve got to offer is irreplaceable, but does your soon-to-be client know that? They should realize this as soon as they read that top line.

This means that you have to point out the useful aspects of your product immediately. Flash can get attention, but substance will keep it.

Does this product stand out from the rest?

If a headline looks the same as everyone else’s, then the product will seem so, too.

It’s always important to discover as many unique selling points this product or service has, during research time (if it’s not your product). Then if you’ve done a good job of explaining it’s uniqueness in your headline, the reader will have no choice but to continue reading to find out more about it.

Headlines need to cut to the quick

Being ambiguous is not an option.

While your writing should never wander away from your points for a moment, your headline needs to be unambiguous enough that there’s no possible misunderstanding. Straying from your strongest appeals simply isn’t an option in such a short, yet important “pitch.”

The masters of headline copy are magazine writers. You only have to visit any newspaper stand or shop to see the row upon row of magazines and newspapers on offer.

Copywriters know their audience very well, and write very compelling copy, in as few a words as possible to ensure their headline are punchy, and compelling.

Just looking at the magazines you browse everyday critically should give you an idea of how you can best tailor your writing to a specific gender, age range, or special interest group.

Is my headline doing it’s job?

When you put these four key techniques into place, your headline will be pulling double duty. It will first grab the prospect’s attention then secondly select her. Because it would’ve said something meaningful to her but on the flip side, had the opposite effect on someone else.

For every five headlines an executive reads, they’re only going to read one full proposal. This means that your headline is worth five times as much money to you as the rest of the copy involved.

The world famous copywriter David Ogilvy has even admitted that spending even a little more time on the headline is well worth it.

So based on that logic and compelling evidence, it would stand to reason that you spend 80% of your time crafting that perfect header. It would be time well spent.

That’s just how important the headline is.
