All training courses on Adobe InDesign should include coverage of how to use styles to improve workflow and achieve consistency within a document and within multiple documents. Most computer users at least know what styles are: labelled formats which can be applied to your text to save you having to manually apply each formatting attribute by itself. Even users new to InDesign will probably have used styles in Microsoft Word: “Heading 1”, “Heading2”, “Normal”, etc. However, InDesign’s use of styles is much more advanced and we always ensure, when we hold InDesign training courses in London, that we underline their importance.

The salient benefits of using styles are, firstly, consistency: the same formats are faithfully applied each time without variations accidentally occurring. Secondly, rapidity: if a heading needs six formatting attributes applied then, without the use of styles, you will have to apply all your attributes manually. If you use a style, you can apply the text formatting with one click or a single keystroke. A third benefit is the ability to change the appearance of your text simply by changing the definition of your styles.

A less obvious advantage to using styles in InDesign is what might be termed scalability. Styles figure prominently in some of the program’s advanced techniques and documents that have no styles cannot benefit from these features. For example, a main aspect of creating XML-based layouts, is that of mapping XML tags to styles to document styles.

A second example is tables of contents. (InDesign creates these from the styles used in a document.) In defining the table of contents, one specifies which styles one wishes to include. When the table of contents is created, InDesign searches for each piece of text in those styles and puts the appropriate page number next to it.

In fact, the table of contents feature is more flexible than the name suggests since it can be used to produce a list of anything within a document where a particular style has been used consistently. For example, if every image in a document has a caption formatted with a particular style, the table of contents facility can be used to produce a list of images.

A third example of the advanced use of styles is when working with books; a feature which enables multiple InDesign documents to be treated as one entity for such operations as preflighting, printing and the production of tables of contents. Different users can work on each document within the book and the styles used within all documents can be streamlined by a process called synchronisation.

Because of its importance, we cover styles both on our basic InDesign training courses and on or advanced InDesign training as well. On our advanced courses, we explain the use of such features as nested styles whereby a character style can be included within a paragraph style and automatically applied to certain characters within the paragraph; for example, all characters up to the first occurrence of a colon or an em dash.

We’ve been there – when you need to make money fast now, and quickly have it coming in. When the pressure is on and the need to make some money quickly is required, we often don’t make our best decisions. Under pressure; through panic or desperation; through necessity – whatever has brought someone to the point that they need to make money fast, it can often cloud judgement and force us to grab at the first thing that seems to present itself in some way as a possible solution.

We’ve personally been in that position; we’ve been at a place where we needed to make some money fast. Here are 3 ways that we identified that can work for you…

1. Affiliate Marketing – don’t be confused or intimidated by this term; it’s simply the case of identifying a product you think there may be a demand for, ascertaining if they have an affiliate program (a commission payout) for that product, then figuring out how to get people to buy that product through your unique affiliate ID number or code. Then, every time someone does, you earn a commission.

3. Doing Freelance Work – If you can write, design, programme, are artistic, creative, can motivate or inspire, then there are loads of opportunities for you out there right now. One of the fastest growing sectors is the freelance market.

Simply put; more and more companies, small businesses and individuals are finding they need someone who they can employ on a freelance basis (so not formally employed) to do some work for them. So a whole industry has emerged of primarily home-based freelance workers who offer their services to freelance agencies who have a database of clients with work projects that they need someone to help them with.

And you will be amazed at how many people will want your services. If the idea of working from the comfort of your own home, working the hours that suits you, and yet still having the ability to earn good money quickly, then you need to consider becoming a freelance worker. Again, rather like survey work, there are good and bad companies out there acting as freelance agencies, sadly of which many don’t deliver what they say. But if you find the right company to work with, you certainly can earn a very healthy income as a freelancer.

This question was puzzling me about two years ago.

When I found the answer, my life changed forever. Let me help you find your own answer.

Something you should know first: there are two different things available for you: work from home and home based business. They are two absolutely different things.

Work from home is something like a typist or virtual assistant or medical billing specialist – when you are actually employed by somebody and you are paid a fixed salary or hourly wages for your services.

Owning a home-based business means you are your own boss and can do what you want, when you want to, and you can potentially earn as much as you want to-you just have to put in the effort. The drawback is the business rest solely on your shoulders. That’s a lot of responsibility.

The electronic revolution has made the Internet the number one way to sell goods and services to the customers who want them, and has allowed sellers to reach an unimaginable amount of potential clients.

And the Internet has given birth to a whole new breed of business men and women: Internet Marketers. It’s an impressive title but it just means they are people who promote products and services over the Internet.

Keeping that in mind, the concept of home-based business often means Internet-based business nowadays.

Like “real businesses,” each Internet venture must have products to sell, a way to promote them, and a way for customers to purchase them.

With so many options, you need to narrow down your prospects to something you are comfortable with.

Compared to traditional “Brick-and-Mortar” businesses, Internet, or home-based businesses have much lower overhead, smaller start-up costs, and almost no necessary equipment-other than a computer, of course. There’s not store front to up keep or pay rent on, there are few, if any, employees to pay, and very small amounts of on-hand inventory. All of this combined, makes it easier to get an Internet business up and running, and allows you to see the results a lot sooner.

The concept of an Internet based business is still new to a lot of people and you are going to here a lot of opinions like “It’s a scam” or “It’s to good to be true”, especially from your uncle Bob, who spent 20 years fixing furnaces and your aunt Polly, who spent her life working at the gas-station.

But a business is a business, whether it’s an Internet venture or a corner grocery store. There will always be risks to everything you do and you stand as much chance of getting conned into buying something you don’t want or need at your local department store as you do on the Internet-maybe more so. If somebody came up to you on the street and offered you a check for ten grand out of the goodness of his own heart, wouldn’t you be a little suspicious?

The best way to protect yourself from getting fleeced anywhere is to find out all you can about a thing before committing to it. You wouldn’t by a car because the dealer told you it would get sixty-miles to the gallon when the window sticker said it only got 20, would you? You’d look into the matter further, maybe check The Blue Book, right? Internet business opportunities should be no different. Get smart! Get educated!

Here are a few things you should look at when considering any Internet business:

– What am I going to be selling?

– will a potential customer see the value of the product without a two hour presentation

– Is there a marketing plan laid out?

– Is anybody going to be there to help you when you have problems?

– what is the profit margin per unit of product (is it 20 cents per bottle of vitamins or $35000 per space shuttle).

Answers to those questions should be readily available to you and will help you make the right decision for you.

There’s a lot of money being made on the Internet and a lot of marketers already out there making it. Before you jump in with both feet, make sure this business is right for you.

I can’t say that I hunted around until I found the best business, but this one has turned out to be the best for me.

Just for fun, next time somebody gets angry and tells you Internet marketing is a scam, ask them how they know, what companies they’ve worked with, how much they had invested, and if they even had a marketing plan. Ask them for names, data, and specific instances.

In most cases these people never tried anything other then going to work for the last ten – twenty years, never made more then $40,000 per year and their opinion is not a valid source of information by any means.
