The neighbours

Your neighbours might not be as enthused as you are about your new enterprise, especially if it results in increased traffic volumes on what would otherwise be a quiet residential street. If you run a business where you work from home but see your clients at their homes or places of business, you will not have to deal with this issue.

If, on the other hand, you plan to have your clients come to your home-office to pick up and drop off their bookkeeping (and assuming your neighbourhood is suitably zoned), it makes sense to discuss your plans with your neighbours first. You are not asking their permission; you are simply informing them as a courtesy and encouraging them to bring any concerns to your attention immediately instead of going to the municipality to complain. Who knows, your neighbours might end up being some of your best clients!

The on-call syndrome

Even if you set parameters on your availability, there is a probability that your clients will not always honour those limits. If you are the type of person who wants to create a distinct separation between your home life and your working life, you may not want to have a home-office. If you do choose to have clients come to your home, here are some tips to make having a home-office easier on you and our family:

Have a separate entrance for your home-office. That way, if you do have unexpected clients, you do not have to traipse them through the kids’ playroom and the kitchen stacked high with dirty dishes.

Communicate your meeting and telephone policies with all of your clients. Make sure they understand what is acceptable and not acceptable. Put a sign on the office entrance door with your hours of operation and information on making appointments.

Be firm but professional with clients who show up unexpectedly. Explain to them (once again) that they will need to make an appointment so that you can be more prepared for their visit.

Rave a telephone and fax line for the business separate from your home line. Turn off the ringer on the office telephone when it’s outside of office hours. Record a telephone message reiterating your office hours and that you will be pleased to return the call during those hours.

Don’t feel bad about setting limits. It will make you look more professional. There are exceedingly few true bookkeeping emergencies that require immediate assistance.

You’ll tend to see patterns that some sites will work better than others at generating traffic.

How To Build Hovercraft Models For A Science Project

Science projects are part of Science Fairs every year. The objective of science projects is to be able to clearly display the principles of a particular branch in this course. So you came up with an idea to build hovercraft models using the applications of physics.

Physics is one the major branches of science that when expanded reveals countless applications. From engineering to simple daily occurrences, this is one of the favorite discussions in a science class. The hovercraft, although not commonly used in urban transportation means, is a perfect example. And so you’re off to a good start.

Identify the materials that you can use. Understanding how to build hovercraft vehicles is the same with any vessel of this type. To come up with one for your project is simply improvising the materials and bringing the applied science to its miniature version. As mentioned, the objective is to show the principles.

Things you will need for this project are:

1. Platform – You can use a wooden disk about the size of a manhole cover. You want a science project that is portable and easy to carry. So keep the size handy. This is probably the biggest in your hovercraft project.

2. Any vacuum cleaner or leaf blower – You can use the vacuum cleaner to provide air flow into your platform. You may use any other gadget as long as you can put the air flow in reverse but this is the easiest to find. Your build hovercraft model must follow the air cushion system of the actual hovercraft.

3. Bendable plastic sheet – This will act as your craft’s improvised skirt. The skirt is supposed to trap air below your platform. When doing so, it builds pressure and thus creates a cushion of air. Because of the plastic sheet’s elastic properties, it will only allow limited air to disperse out of its contained space.

4. Fasteners – Now you have almost everything you need to make your science project. What you need to do next is to have some fasteners such bolts and nuts to fasten them together.

5. Next is a drawing of your science project hovercraft – To do this, you need to check on other hovercraft kits. Learn the principles. The components should be similar to the materials you have. For example, the fanning system in actual hovercrafts is represented by your leaf blower. The hovercraft hull is you platform disk and so on.

All these things above you will need for the project. Your hovercraft project should be able to carry a real person. Of course you can’t guarantee it could carry anyone who is heavier than you. Use your weight as a basis. That is why the platform is suggested to be the size of a manhole cover for this purpose. Last but not least, remember to always pay attention to you science teacher in class.
