Broad Band Cable Beats Out Other Internet Access Technology

by Rachel Smith

There are a number of different ways to get access to the Internet in your own home, and some are better than others. For example, some of the technologies that you can use to access the Internet are DSL, satellite Internet, broad band cable, and dial up networking.

DSL is can only loosely be defined as a high speed Internet access technology because it’s limited to less than two megabytes per second of download speed. (Actually most DSL connections don’t even attain half a megabyte per second of download speed!) DSL is also only available in areas where there are good enough phone lines to support the technology.

The main advantage of satellite Internet is that it’s available just about anywhere, but it has a number of limitations on its usefulness. For example, while it’s definitely fast, there’s a serious time lag built into it because of the distance that signals have to travel two and from the satellites. This time lag makes online gaming and VoIP applications difficult if not impossible. Satellite Internet is also extremely expensive and limited to about two megabytes per second in download speed.

Dial up networking is the cheapest form of Internet access, and next to satellite, it’s the most widely available. It’s so pathetically slow, that it really isn’t worth having except as a last resort.

Broad band cable based Internet is probably the best service for the widest range of people, and it’s certainly the fastest. While it’s only available to people who live within the service area of a digital cable TV provider, it can provide download speeds that are four times faster than satellite Internet, six times faster than DSL, and one hundred times faster than dial up! It also has a quick response time which makes it good for applications like online multiplayer video gaming and VoIP.

One of the premier companies that offers broad band cable based Internet service is Comcast. In addition to offering reliable high speed Internet access to homes over a wide geographical area, Comcast also provides a number of features that will enhance the user experience. For example, all subscribers receive freebies like a cable modem, a wireless router, anti-virus software- along with updates- and access to lots of online content. The online content includes features from NASCAR.com, Rhapsody Internet radio, and video clips from CNN. Subscribers also have complementary online storage space which serves as a good way to back up data.

In addition to free features and content, Comcast provides its subscribers with the option of purchasing other products and services. For example, they can purchase an optional firewall. Firewalls are effective ways to keep a home network invisible to hackers and will also provide an extra layer of security to keep any Spyware that gets onto home computers from sending sensitive information back out.

In addition to high speed Internet service, Comcast also provides digital cable TV with hundreds of channels and home phone service with money saving features. The digital cable TV service has state of the art features like video on demand and HDTV, and the phone service will save you money with free unlimited domestic long distance. Both of these services are a good complement to high speed Internet access.

The Generation Game: Does Age Groups Different Personalities

by Andrew Baud

Do different age groups have different personality types? A new study asks the question, and offers some surprising answers, as Talent Q founder Roger Holdsworth explains.

Age-related stereotypes abound in our society. From the portrait of selfish, feckless youth in TV shows like Skins through to the grumpy, conservative vision of old age provided by Victor Meldrew in One Foot in the Grave.

But do these crude caricatures hold up to serious scrutiny? Or – to put it another way – do different generations have specific characteristics that we should be aware of as HR professionals?

At Talent Q, we compared nearly 4,000 people across three generations – Generation Y (with an average age of 22), Generation X (average of 35) and the Baby Boomers (average of 55) to see if there were any clear trends.

The results challenged stereotypes, but also posed some interesting questions for the future.

First, we found that those in their early 20s had higher ethical standards, showed greater attention to detail and were more socially adept than older generations. All of which goes against popular perceptions of modern youth.

But surprising, the younger generation also proved to be less adaptable to variety and change, less likely to be good decision-makers, and less able to cope with a fast pace of work. Generation Ys were also generally less organised, less keen on planning their workload and less efficient than other generations.

Should we be worried by this? Well yes, possibly.

A shifting economy means adaptability, efficiency and dynamism are key traits for a modern workforce. One study suggests that Generation Y is likely to have an average of 14 different jobs by the time they turn 35, so it is a little concerning – not to mention perverse – that the younger generations seem less well disposed to change than their elders.

The 20-somethings we studied also tended to be less resilient, less confident at negotiation and decision-making, less influential in a leadership capacity and less able or willing to follow the rules – all of which tallies with bosses’ complaints in annual CBI surveys.

But there were positives to draw upon too. Our research explodes the myth that younger people tend to be surlier and more selfish than previous generations. In fact, the Generation Ys were found to be more socially aware and more in tune with other’s behaviour than their elders.

They also generally showed a stronger ethical code, which bodes well as business flexes to meet important challenges like climate change and corporate social responsibility: these agendas, it would seem, are in safe hands for the future.

So what then of the ‘Baby Boomers’? Can we put some of their caricatures to the sword too?

Well certainly, the idea that older generations are conservative and ‘set in their ways’ can be challenged quite strongly.

The 50 and 60-somethings we surveyed were more likely to adopt new techniques and more likely to favour radical ideas than the younger generations – proof that “you can teach an old dog new tricks.”

But interestingly, the same generation were also found to be less ambitious, less competitive and less likely to fit in with different types of people.

The difference in ambition and competitiveness may be explained by the ageing process – with older people easing down as they approach retirement.

But the social dimension suggests one abiding stereotype may have a grain of truth to it. Our findings do appear to bear out the ‘grumpy old man’ tag. Statistically at least, older generations are less socially adept than younger people – so Victor Meldrew, it would seem, continues to flourish in our society!

Of course, these conclusions are interesting, sometimes quite amusing. But they come with a big health warning – and that is that they remain massive generalisations. The differences we did record – while statistically significant – remained small, suggesting that there is actually more similarity between generations than many pundits might have you believe.

So the bottom line is simple, if a bit dull: there simply are no short-cuts. All stereotypes are inevitably flawed. They exist, as someone wisely wrote, “to save a biased person the trouble of learning.”

That’s a lesson we should all remember before we make a snap judgement based on person’s age. More often than not, you will be wrong.

Cv Writing Tips

by Ada Denis

How is a Good CV Used?

The good news is that your CV may be used in various ways for different purposes, but your CV is not written to get a job. It is a self-marketing tool to get you a meeting or job interview.

When responding to an advertised job vacancy, a well written CV and a good covering letter will be instrumental in obtaining those vital interviews.

Most recruiters use CVs as a method of screening people out rather than in, so pay attention to avoiding the pitfalls and any negative statements, always be positive, communicating your aspirations, skills, demonstrated abilities and achievements. (You can download a free CV template to suit your profession and job search needs online at my website).

If an appointment is being headhunted, a Researcher or a Search Consultant handling the assignment will speak to the job candidate before you provide a CV to the employer before or during an interview. You job candidate will have learned a good deal about the job before the delivery of the CV. Usually Head-hunters will not pass your CV on to the employer. Instead, they should make a CV or profile for you, the job candidate. You may send your CV to Head-hunters on a speculative basis. It may then used to decide whether or not to put you on their database.

When you are networking, you may take your CV along to meetings with a view either to asking for advice on it or in order to give copies to your network contacts, which they may in turn pass on to other people who could have a job for you.

When you are making speculative applications, you are initially likely to send a letter, rather than a CV, perhaps taking your CV along to any meetings you obtain. It will then be used in much the same way that slides or handouts are at a presentation – as something to refer to in order to give structure to the session and as a reminder, afterwards, of the key points.

Finding A Good Home Nursing Job Has Great Prospects

by Ada Denis

It is an acknowledged fact that in America, the number of aging people is higher, as well as greying persons, compared to the younger generation in what is called a population ratio of aged versus young. This is a source of worry for the Administration, irrespective of the political polarities. One of the key factors for this has been the higher level of medical care, combined with a lower birth rate, as families tend to disintegrate, and couples prefer not to have children, as far as possible. These are borne out by statistics, but that is not is the issue here.

But the above has its implications. As humans age, so does their medical and para medical aid requirement increases. In fact, most life insurance and medicare insurance companies are quite worried about this trend. Surely, you would have read about it. it’s a fact. And that proves an opportunity for you.

If you are a qualified nurse, or a degree, experience or education in medicare, you should find yourself finding a job quite fast. And of your choice too.

There are numerous facilities that care for the aged. In fact, they have flourished in the last decade, as the aged cannot or are not able to be cared for by their children, and prefer to be put in a care home, where they can be with their own age group, and spend their twilight years in good harmonious surroundings. Of course, jobs in these facilities are tough. There is a lot of trauma involved in emotions, age-related trauma, medication, para medical care in helping those who need help in eating, washing, cleaning, walking, or being wheeled around. Some have difficulty in speech, some are silent, brooding, some are vicious, because of the wounds they have suffered, pensiveness, and so forth. You know it better as a nurse or as a para medic.

The pay is good, better than the average, and the times off are also quite compensatory. The management of these special care homes value the staff, and see that you are taken care of.

The other type of job is in the private clinics, which also abound. In these too, you can find yourself a good job, given the increasing level of specialization that is coming in rapidly. Here too, you would find nursing homes attached which cater to the specialized treatment required. Again, since this would be a specialized center, you cannot expect to have a cushy job. The pay would be good, and the management would certainly prefer to have you happy. But again, you have to deal with various traumatic ailments/diseases, and have to lend more than a nursing hand. You have to provide emotional support, and apart from the usual medical dispensation you have to provide, you may also be required to provide moral support.

Another opportunity that has arisen is that of home care nursing. This requires you to stay with the patient at the residence with them, and provide both nursing and para medical care. Obviously, your pay would be much higher, comfortable living, and having to care for one or two geriatrics generally, or even a younger child with an ailment. This works well for those who find themselves getting emotionally involved with the various trauma normally seen in private nursing homes, and in special care centers. But the level of care is certainly the same. What makes the difference is that you have to take care of only one or two people, and it is certainly easier.

To find these kinds of jobs is fairly simple. You could register with a private nursing agency, or scan the newspapers for ads. In taking up home nursing jobs, you are advised to exercise caution; make sure the owners are good people, and have a good reputation. It would not be worth it if you are subjected to any kind of harassment, especially sexual advances. It is better to check them out before taking up these kinds of jobs.

Don’t raise condo fees lower spending first.

Contact an attorney who focuses on insurance claims. Many insurance companies deny underpay insurance claims. Many times the law states that the insurance company has to pay the legal fees. Moreover, many attorneys will handle insurance claims in a way that no funds will be out of pocket.

Rehabilitate instead of Replace. Copper pipes can be restored to better than new condition with epoxy pipe lining from CuraFlo. It is generally 30% cheaper than re piping and is much less obtrusive. RLS Solutions offers sewer rehabilitation which can increase their life and save on costs.

Domestic Helper USA Visa: Reviewing the Rules

by Alice Sy

For a U.S.-applying domestic helper, USA Visa is very much necessary. No domestic helper is able to enter the States or to travel with their employer without an approved visa. When it comes to applying for one, you need to remember the necessary rules.

Basically, a domestic helper needs to apply for a non-immigrant visa. A non-immigrant visa is required since the domestic helpers are not allowed to stay within the U.S. after the contract has already expired. This means that before a domestic helper can work in the U.S., he or she must already have an existing employer.

For a lawful recognition on the worker rights in the U.S. of the domestic helper, USA Visa must first be obtained. Along with the scheduled interview in the American embassy, a domestic helper must be able to present the necessary papers such as passport, application confirmation sheet, and other expired or existing visas.

Your domestic helper needs to be able to pay for the required fee for visa application. The application form is available on the Internet and the payment cannot be refunded after being made. The length of time that the fee can be deemed valuable is within one year of date of payment.

Over the web, there is an application form in electronic format which needs to be filled up by the domestic helper. USA Visa cannot be given to anyone who does not follow the stipulated requirements. Furthermore, a very recent photo of the domestic helper applying for visa is required.

Along with these documents, an existing contract between employee and employer must also be shown to the designated embassy authorities during the interview. This will be proof that the domestic helper already has a job waiting for him or her in the U.S.

A proof of residence in the home country of the domestic helper must also be established initially. This will serve as verification on the non-intention of the domestic helper to overstay. Illegal staying in the country is unacceptable for any domestic helper. USA Visa can only be given when intent of overstaying is not identified.

Last but not least, it is also often important for the domestic helper to be employed already for at least a year before applying for an American visa. Nonetheless, as long as the requirements are judiciously followed by the domestic helper, USA Visa approval will no doubt be a guarantee.

Babysitting Agencies: How To Choose the Right One

by Rashel Dan

Babysitting agencies are a great help. Getting a sitter from an agency will give you some assurance that procedures have been followed to ensure that you have a qualified sitter. Different agencies however have different methods and procedures. You would want to be with an agency that can source the best sitters. How do you know that you are with a good agency?

Source of Sitters

Background – Finding out about an agency’s background is a given. Your next step should be finding our exactly where they get their sitters. It would be good if an agency can get sitters from various sources. After all, this is not a question of discriminating against certain places as sources for sitters. It’s about finding out how they screen their applicants.

Look for an agency that conducts preliminary checks, investigation and screening. This includes verifying a sitter’s real identity and checking for past records of cases of misdemeanor. Determine how an agency conducts its checks.

Agency Requirements for Sitters

What are the agency’s requirements in accepting sitters? Are sitters required to have certificates in first aid courses? In some cases, sitter applicants aren’t required to have these certificates. This is because not every sitter would have the motivation or resources to take these courses. Some agencies however take it upon themselves to provide learning opportunities. A sitter who is well-versed in emergency response is valuable. You would want a sitter who can respond to emergencies and accidents.

Sitter Matching

They should be able to offer you a sitter who can respond specifically to your needs. Your sitter for example should be able to work well with kids who have the same ages as yours. You may also have special requirements such as sitters being able to cook as well. Find out how an agency will help you find the exact sitter that you need. Some agencies will help you interview their sitters so you can find a good match. Others will interview you personally so they can determine your needs and find a sitter who fits.

Agency Guarantees

Your agency should have some form of guarantee. Products typically have money back guarantees. Agencies on the other hand have guarantees for replacements. This is important because there will be instances when your sitter will be unable to come in. It is also quite possible that you may not be satisfied with your sitter and would like a replacement. Will your agency replace a sitter at no extra cost?

Cost

As with everything else, the price is a crucial factor. How much do you have to pay your agency for a sitter? You may have to pay an initial fee whether or not you finally decide to get a sitter from them. Some agencies have non-refundable initial fees. You then have to pay for a placement fee. This amount covers the costs for agency services include background checks. In some cases you may have to pay extra for transportation costs. Once you have your sitter, you have to pay her an agreed sum every month.

Compared to looking for a sitter yourself, you may have to spend a bit more with an agency. If you think about it though, the cost may be worth every penny. Just think about it as paying a large amount for the safety of your kids.
