Planning for Tomorrow

Following is part three of an interview with Phyllis Slater, owner of Slater Solutions LLC. Ms. Slater has devoted years to providing coaching and concierge services to the working caregiver and aging parent. Visit Phyllis Slater’s website simply by Googling the name Phyllis Slater.

Q. Why should we plan for tomorrow now?

A. Possible situation… I have vision difficulties but can still live without assistance. However, a year from now I may need help with cooking, cleaning, shopping, driving and paying bills.

Medications can be placed in a pre-programmed medication dispenser with monitoring company assistance. If the medication is not taken in a reasonable period of time, the company will call my son. Non-medical in-home care will be hired to attend to all these needs.

If I fall on the coffee table and spend a week in the hospital, the geriatric managers may recommend a rehabilitation center for treatment.

Whether I am able to return home or must move to a living facility, my family will hire an organizer to come in and rearrange furniture, lower items in the kitchen so they can be reached, removed unwanted items, and boxed up rarely used items.

A real estate agent will already be chosen, but not hired, just in case I must sell the home. Again, that is planning for the unknown. Whatever the outcome, the stress of last minute decision-making has been reduced.

Remember that part of this relocation process is finding a reliable moving company, and now there are companies that, for a fair rate, will pick up unwanted items.

Now, there are Adult Day Care Centers for individuals with mental challenges. Our senior center has one that gives family caregivers some respite time –providing the social interaction they need.

If I cannot return home because of extra caregiving needs, it may be appropriate to move into an Assisted Living facility, which is private pay. Assisted living facilities allow residents to feel more independent while having 24/7 caregiving when needed. Having social interaction with peers can reduce depression and keep the mind more alert. There are Continuing Care Facilities that have Independent, Assisted Living and Nursing Care all on the same property — for easing into each other while being accessible to friends created on-site.

Spending time in the elder care field, I planned ahead by contacting a Long Term Care Insurance Specialist.

Next, my son was made legal guardian with all my finances in both of our names (Elder Care Attorney). In addition, my Financial Planner has made wise investments for me over the years. I made sure my son and other family members have copies of all paperwork. Each child understands the reason for my decision-making.

My friend did not plan ahead of time, has no money for care, and applied for Medicaid. This is why I am so passionate about planning ahead. This may mean that she will have to go into a nursing home rather than the assisted living facility.

A small amount of Assist Living facilities qualify for Medicaid Waiver programs. This means that Medicaid would pay some of the cost, which is great for those with financial difficulties. However, the waiting list for an opening could take years. Talk with a government agency about the options available in the meantime.

Another option is to live at home with 24/7 care, and use the equity of the home for a Reverse Mortgage. This option is a safety net, allowing for quality care in the comfort of your own home. There are advantages and disadvantages with using a Reverse Mortgage, so check with the Reverse Mortgage Specialists before making a decision. The key is to learn about it now. If you don’t use this, pass the information to others later.

In some states there are Senior Foster Homes, which are residential homes with 24/7 on-site care. With only four bedrooms, each resident receives personal care and can participate in responsibilities — such as setting the dinner table. These homes can take the place of an assisted living or even nursing home. Professional staff is hired or the owner could be a licensed nurse. This is a great option but also requires private pay.

Hospice care is now provided in the home, the care facility, or their own hospice faculties. The requirement is usually a paper from the doctor saying it is predicted a person’s life will end within six months. Naturally, if this does not happen, the care should still be available. Different states may have different requirements for keeping hospice beyond that time. This is a service that is sadly underutilized. To my knowledge, there is no cost to the family for this service.

Job Board Application Process

I always enjoy reading interviewChatter and specifically this morning, there was a post discussing a new site which aggregated job boards allowing for easier access, thus reducing the job application time for applicants. Read the full article that was posted. In reading this, I began to think about the importance of this, and more importantly was this site truly offering the job seeker hope or false hope in the quantity of what was being presented to them. With so many job boards, and thus so many jobs…there must be something there for me. Is that right?

Well the answer might not be that simple or is it? Personally, I think job boards serve one purpose alone and that is an easy and quick way to see what companies are hiring. It is a simple view into how companies view the value of their own jobs, and with some basic techniques, one can determine which companies are most aggressive in their hiring as well.

A critical component that people fail to realize is the purpose of the job board from the perspective of the people that created them, as well as the people posting the position. Look at the people that created the boards – their purpose was simple which was to create a simple and easy forum for companies to tell people they were hiring, and then people to tell companies that they were interested in applying. Now the companies that are hiring are looking to expand their network and cast a net wide enough to come across the person that just might fit their need. So what does this all mean for the person applying? Little unless you take into consideration the above. So how do we make this work for us, the applicant?

Lets analyze the process from the other side. I have had the opportunity to sit inside some of the largest companies evaluating their recruiting processes, specifically their application process flow. Which in layman’s terms is the way a company handles a resume once the application is processed. What most people will be amazed at is that most of these processes are doomed for failure as the companies’ hiring have poor application processes therefore never being able to get the resume of the applicant into the hands of the right person. Therefore the job goes un-filled, or simply under filled as the hiring manager becomes dejected with the lack of proper candidates, subjecting him/herself to someone of lesser qualifications as they believe that the perfect person does not exist.

To offset this problem, we need to address the process at its core and then use the job boards for what they are good for. These are some common steps to consider that will immediately place you atop the list of applicants when considering the job board process.

1. Look through several of the general job boards, determine which companies are hiring. Stay away from recruiting companies as they are looking for different reasons than you are.

2. When a list of companies has been determined, apply to those companies through the job board. Ensure that applications have cover letters specific to the positions themselves, as well as take down all contact information that is present on the advertisement.

3. Go to the companies website and apply through their career section.

4. Call the company directly, ask for the director or VP that oversees the particular department. Most of the time, you can determine that via the web in small and medium companies. Large companies you will need to call and ask. DO NOT call and ask who is hiring for a certain role, you will always be directed to HR.

5. Once located the manager, briefly introduce yourself and let them know your interest. Find out their direct contact info and send your resume to them as well along with the cover letter.

6. Design a follow up schedule allowing for frequent yet not pestering reconnection with the manager. Determine interest, sell yourself, and move on.

7. Never place all your eggs in one basket, as the percentages are not in your favor to get a job even if you have an interview. Keep yourself out there and applying using the above method, getting your name and person in front of decision makers within your industry.

I know that to some that the process appears aggressive. I have spoken and advised people on these tactics for years. Know this, no one has ever come back and told me that they wished they would have applied for a role online and waited for a response instead of doing the process. It works.

What To Do Before You Call Tech Support About Your Computer

You may think that they lied to you when they said that computers are easy to use. A computer is a complex device. Anything can and does go wrong. The tech-support people know this, and they brace themselves for anything. Callers range from the timid beginner who still has the computer in the box to the hacker whose computer has been utterly disassembled and desoldered. You can make the job of a tech-support person so much easier by doing a little research before you call. Let us examine how.

Find out who owns the problem and narrow things down. Is it hardware or software? That way, you can call the proper place. Try as many solutions yourself as possible. Tech-support people will be absolutely amazed if you have already checked the Device Manager or worked in the System Configuration Utility. Believe it or not, they might ask you to look there once again. If this were to occur, have a little patience and realize that they are most likely going by a scripted check list which they are required by their employer to do before moving on to the next level.

Determine whether the problem is repeatable. Be prepared to demonstrate to tech support that the bug is not random and can be reproduced. Be prepared to give lots of information, so do your homework before you call. Review and accomplish any steps in the troubleshooting section of your operator manual and collect as much information from that experience as you possibly can. When you do find the tech-support number, mark it and highlight it. Better yetl, write it in the front of the manual. It is always a good idea to add it to your address book. You might even want to spray-paint it on the wall in your office or something. Just remember what you did with it.

One important piece of information to relate to tech support is which version of Windows you have. It also helps to know the version of any application or utility that you figure is causing the problem. To find out the Windows version, open the System icon in the Control Panel: From the Control Panel Home, choose System and Maintenance and then System. From the Control Panel Classic view, open the System icon. Or, right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop, and choose Properties from the pop-up menu. From the System window you can get basic information about your computer.

Also in the System window you will discover lots of other useful info for tech support, such as data about your computer processor and memory along with other trivia. You do not have to cough up all the information displayed in the System window. Offer only what the tech-support person asks for.

Realize that Windows may not be the issue with your PC. It could be another piece of software that you are running. In such an instance, you might have to provide the tech-support person the version of that particular program. This data is not quite the same as the version number for Windows as every piece of software has its own version number. To find out the version of any specific application, choose the Help About command. The About command is usually followed by the program name. That command displays a dialog box with the program full name, release, and version information. And you could be lucky enough to find a quick button to click for connecting to tech support.

Be sure that your company’s information is included on your sample. In this manner, visitors who love your sample will constantly be reminded of where they got it, and be able to come back to your website again.
