Too many colleges just do courses. Always use a provider that specialises in IT training geared to the needs of industry. If you also have professional user-skills such as ECDL, MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) or MCDST (Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician), it will also open the door to help-desk work. This could involve solving problems verbally over the phone, or using remote access tools to takeover someone’s computer via the internet or network.

If working in a company looking after it’s network is your goal, a CompTIA Network+, or Microsoft networking route (MCSA – MCSE) will be required to add to your networking skills.

If this sort of course presses your buttons, then it’s very likely you’re a practical, hands-on sort of person. Learning to you usually means getting stuck in and having a go! Reading manuals is a last resort when you can’t figure out what to do next, and any manuals you have got are probably gathering dust with no more than 50 pages read between them.

If you’re nodding in agreement, you’ll find the conventional study route of books and classrooms very uncomfortable and something you’ll have to force yourself to do. What you need is fully interactive on-screen training.

Instead, you can watch tutorials of some of the best trainers in video format then see them demonstrate the actual process on-screen . Then it’s your turn to get hands-on, interacting with the software in virtual labs to practice what you’ve just been shown. Your long term career development will be the sum of your reading over the next five years, and the five years after that. Who knows after ten years someone may develop an implanted chip that will substitute for reading. But for now, reading is the name of the game. After five years don’t be the person who is known as the one who ate 2114 Krispy Kreme donuts and read two books, and one had a lot of pictures.

You don’t have to be a long time reader to only add to your reading inventory. Some of us read fast and have the capacity to remember everything. Most of us read slower and it may take a couple of times for us to get all the required information. If you have a treasured motivational book you may read it two, four or more times, getting more valuable information from it each time.

The path to take is to read, and you’ll get the required information. To improve you understanding and greatly increase your overall enjoyment in reading you should determine why you’re reading the particular book or article or magazine. By determining the reason before you start your comprehension and pleasure will increase, and ultimately your overall career development will accelerate.

Be honest, you absolutely do not have to read everything. Not everything you come across contains information you need. In fact a lot of it is junk. Throw it out or hit the delete key. Use the time you just saved to read the things important to your career and your reading plan.

This may sound contradictory but you don’t need to read all of what you do read. You don’t need to read every article in that magazine or every chapter in that book. Select the articles in the magazine or the chapter in the book that are important, and ignore the rest. When you do find the book that has something of interest in every chapter, take notes, and after you read it put it aside to reread.

One trick to prioritize your reading is to scan the table of contents, the index, and the headlines. You’ll pick up two important ideas: (1) do you have an interest in the contents? and; (2) what desirable information will you get from reading the book, magazine or article? If it fits into your reading plan go for it.

Your reading environment should be comfortable, you’ll read faster and comprehend more. Of course, there are times, like carrying reading material in your car to read when waiting is the exception to the rule. Once you start reading read it straight through, with books being the exception. With books try and read in chapter bites. If you have questions, take notes and go back and get the answers or do further research.

You’re reading with a purpose, it’s all part of your career development and the reading plan you designed. Set monthly book reading goals. Keep a notebook or journal; write down new ideas for books to read. Take advantage of your commuting time to listen to books in your car’s CD player. So overall you’ll be reading with a purpose so keep your focus.

Remember, the more you read, the quicker your speed and comprehension. In five years, you’ll look back and see you’ve read 120 or more books. Your career will be on track and you’ll be able to point to the many valuable ideas and contributions they have made to your career.

If you are considering a change of career or are looking for a place to start, then driving a lorry for a living has many great things to offer. It seems that on the whole, lorry drivers are pretty passionate about their way of life and there is a sense of belonging to a team if you are one of them even though you work largely alone.

One of the first benefits from a LGV job is the flexibility it can offer you. Unlike nine to five jobs, you can often adapt your hours to what best suits you. The main thing is that you get your cargo from A to B when promised. If you are more a night person, then this is one of the few jobs where you can excel within those hours! Or, if you are scared of the thought of being away from your family for days and nights on end, don’t be! You should be able to find a job that allows you to keep to nine to five hours if that is what you would rather do. You can also expect good money right from the get go! You could be looking at a starting salary of anywhere upwards of ?20,000! You don’t need to work your way up from the post room on a pittance of a salary that is impossible to survive on. Lorry driving pays well, it’s a fact. You could also be entitled to sick pay, holiday pay and even pension benefits.

Modern lorries are well equipped, there should be a bed and fridge. There are laws that strictly govern a lorry drivers hours and rest time is mandatory. You are not allowed to drive for more than nine hours a day, fifty six hours a week or ninety hours a fortnight. The law states that you must have rest time of at least eleven hours per day, uninterrupted! Many city workers don’t get anywhere near that much! So you are well protected by laws which ensure that your hours are fair.

Training for a basic LGV license can take as little as five days! Then you are fully qualified and ready to go. What other job gives you qualifications that translate directly into jobs with high salaries within that kind of time scale? Haulage companies are facing a shortage of lorry drivers so it puts you in a very commanding position when job hunting. This industry gives you the power to know the worth of your qualifications, which is a very unusual position to be in. Most graduates have no such luck!

As you can see, the benefits are plentiful. So if you want a flexible job with great progression opportunities and job security, where your office is the open road, get yourself some LGV training straight away and become the driver of your own destiny.
