The Best Possible Internship College Students Can Land

by katie George

Success upon graduation from college often hinges on what one did while in college. This goes beyond the usual wake up, go to class, study and get good grades model that many students feel is the only routine they are required to adhere by.

One of the great things about college is that the student is not independent, to an extent, of their parent’s control and can make decisions for themselves.

Finding an internship college students will envy is hard to do and is one of those important decisions college students are faced with. Making the right decisions is important in determining one’s success while at the college level. Upon graduation, those who broke from the simple routine of class, study, test will be delighted to find that employers and recruiters are wildly impressed with those who take initiative to better themselves as job candidates. An internship college is a great way to gain experience and even make some extra money in the process.

Employers and interviewers are looking for candidates who have something unique or valuable to offer their company or the position they are applying for that goes beyond the two-dimensional candidates they probably interview in abundance.

As more and more students gain internships, finding a unique internship college that offers something special to the intern is becoming sought after more and more. Whatever the position, a student should look for internships that allow them to grow and develop their skills. Nobody wants to see somebody who stood stagnant through their four years of college, as employers may see it as an indicator of things to come.

What To Look For In Web Hosting

by Gray Rollins

If you are starting a new website, affordable web hosting is a service you cannot do without. When we say web hosting, we are referring to the companies which provide space on their servers, bandwidth and networking equipment which enables your site to be on the web. Without a web host for your site, it doesn’t matter how much work you put into it; no one is going to see it unless it is online.

There are many different web hosting companies these days and they offer a wide variety of different packages and pricing options. When trying to decide on a web hosting company you should evaluate your needs carefully before you go shopping for web hosting, especially if you are building a web site for your business.

You may need video or audio content on your site, or allow users to upload these kinds of files. These are large files, so you’ll need plenty of bandwidth for your website. Go through each feature you want and think about what this means in terms of your web hosting package (if you’re not so tech-savvy, run this list by a friend who knows a bit more about websites). Finding a good deal on web hosting begins with knowing what you’re looking for.

There are even free web hosting options. While these are fine if you just want to build a small personal website, they are not ideal for businesses for a number of reasons – the disk space, bandwidth and features offered are typically limited and of course, using a free web host for your business’ web site gives a bad impression to visitors.

The next consideration is shared versus dedicated web hosting. Shared hosting is just what it sounds like – your website will be sharing space on one of the web hosting companies’ services with many other websites.

This is also not really ideal for a business website; you can run into difficulties due to the actions of other websites hosted on the same server.

For example, if one of the other sites uses too much bandwidth, this can slow down the performance of your site. It is far better to opt for dedicated web hosting for a business website.

You also need to think about the very important topic of technical support. Your website needs to have highly skilled and responsive support and service behind it. In case of any technical problems, you need to know that your site will be up and running again in short order. You should find out how the web hosting company you are considering performs in this department by talking to some of their current customers about their experiences with the customer service and technical support departments.

There are yet other things you should think about when looking for web hosting services, but in this article we have covered some of the top priorities. These can give you a good head start on finding a web hosting company which offers the service and features you need for your business.

Man, trying to find parts for old cell phones is hard.

by Collin De Ruyck

I sure would hate to be a person these days with an older cell phone model. Trying to find parts for the is incredibly hard. I ran into this situation a few weeks ago where my cell phone charger bit the big one and I could not find a replacement in any of my local stores.

After a few hours of looking for a replacement cell phone charger for my two year old phone I was able to find what I needed. I love the fact that almost everything is available online now.

When I started my hunt for my cell phone charger it took me a bit to find a place that carried it, and had it in stock and was not going to charge the heck out of me for shipping it.

Ever notice that when you buy something on ebay, it takes for ever for it to get to you. Your relying on the seller to actually care that you bought something from them. When I placed my order for my cell pone charger, I had it in less then a week. Beat that eBay!

I want to keep my old phone as long as I can before I have to upgrade to either a Blackberry or a iPhone. I don’t know, maybe I am still a bit old fashioned.

What to Consider When Buying an LCD Monitor

by Mary Bush

An LCD monitor, or Liquid Crystal Display monitor, is a screen actively sought after as a large format TV screen or an advertising screen as a result of the highest quality images produced on these screens.

Top 10 items to consider when buying LCD Monitor:

1. Resolution Quality: Some of the key features to consider when buying an LCD monitor are resolution quality and aspect ratio. In the era of Blue-ray and high definition, it is important to buy a Full HD monitor and not go with HD ready.

2. Number of USB Hubs: These hubs usually come with the display. They prove to be very useful for plugging various media devices directly to the display vs. going through a central medial player.

3. Pixel Defects: Sometimes, when the same image is left on the screen for long, the pixels get worn out or are dead. This develops a black or white dot on the screen, thus not producing any image in that area. Pixel defects may be as a result of manufacturing defects. Make sure the warranty covers Pixel defects or spotting defects.

4. Attached Speaker Evaluation: Some monitors come with attached speaker systems. This is usually expensive when compared to the separate speaker system and usually poor quality than a stand alone system. If such an attached speaker system is available in the monitor, then it should be noted that a quick-mute button and readily accessible volume controls should be available in the monitor itself.

5. Viewing Angle: Most new LCD monitors have wide viewing angles. It is important to consider viewing-angle performance if you plan to use the monitor to view images or movies. The best way to judge is to see the unit in person.

6. Digital interfaces: Data interfaces are very important for businesses. For example, as a business you would like to remotely manage and control the various LCD monitors. Businesses should strongly consider LCD information display (also called Professional Displays) vs. an LCD TV. The Professional Displays come with the right variety of interfaces. If entertainment and TV show watching are the only concerns then interfaces are less important as most LCD monitors come with adequate interfaces.

7. Bright Pixel Elimination Feature: New LCD monitors have bright pixel elimination feature that ensures if a failed pixel occurs on the monitor, it is effectively invisible to the viewer. Not a must-have but a good feature to have.

8. Configuration Programming Software: Included programs that let you configure display settings using your computer keyboard or mouse are a big improvement over struggling with tiny front-panel buttons.

9. Portrait Capability: Increasingly portrait format is being used for exhibitions and store displays. Be sure to check that the LCD monitor you are buying supports the portrait format. Using landscape format in portrait can result in reducing the life of the LCD monitor. Portrait-capable LCDs, however, often have superior viewing-angle performance. Not all LCD monitors.

10. Included Cables: Last but not the least item is to check to see what cables are included. Manufacturers often don’t provide the digital cable on dual-input models.

As a wrap-up, with technologies such as LCD monitors, it pays to buy the new generation solution as it will extend the time you will use the monitor.

Content Developer

by Mary Bush

There are many of people who have positions as content developers, sometimes without even being aware of it. Content developer is a description which can be taken to cover a very wide range of writing work. This is a career which is almost entirely focused on communication through the written word and is something which has crossovers with many career paths – journalism, marketing and advertising and more.

Many of those employed as content developers do so as a part of their job duties where they are tasked to create content for company websites, newsletters and/or other publications. Depending on your educational and professional background, as well as your general temperament, this can be a very rewarding line of work. If you have an interest in writing as a career path, then being a content developer may be an ideal position for you.

A lot of people who do this sort of work are self employed and do their content development work on a freelance basis (in the interests of full disclosure, this author is one such content developer. Being self employed in this sort of work can be a very personally and financially rewarding thing. Being self employed as a content developer allows you to engage in a variety of different work, which helps you to hone your writing skills on many different projects. Having this kind of variety prevents the sort of burnout often seen in office work and this variation makes your professional life interesting – you can actually look forward to beginning work each day. Of course, there are some downsides, since you must essentially create your own job description and find and secure work, It takes discipline and a dedication to your craft in order to be successful – but for many, this is a viable profession.

When you are self employed as a content developer, your daily routine will vary so much that there is no real “typical work day” to speak of. Getting back to those who are engaged in content development for one particular company, a typical workday may be something like this. More than likely, you will be dealing with a regular production/publication schedule in this case, perhaps even daily (in the case of blogs and websites, which are becoming increasingly common as a vehicle for corporate communications).

You will come into the office and generally begin your day be catching up on email and then scanning the industry journals and newspapers for new developments which are relevant to the industry you are employed in content developers may be employed in any industry. You will identify news and information which should be incorporated into your content and if you are working on a website or blog posts, then the next step will be to draft the day’s update or post. This will then go through a process of rewriting, editing and proofreading; the work of proofreading and/or editing may be done by someone else, particularly if you are employed at a larger company. Following this, you will rework your draft into a final form and it will be proofread once more to catch typos and grammatical errors. Then your content will be ready to post on the web.

If you are working on a hard copy publication, the process will be similar. However, since there will generally be more lead time given to produce this sort of content, you will also spend a part of your day on research. A content developer needs not only writing skills, but also analytical skills and a strong set of communication skills in order to get the information needed to craft the content they are working on. A journalism background is very helpful in this career for this reason.

If you are interested in this sort of work, you may be curious as to what sort of compensation is offered. This depends greatly on your level of experience and the industry in which you are employed. Those who are self employed in this field essentially have the freedom to dictate their own salary, depending on their skills and their willingness to put in the necessary time to secure projects. For those employed by a company, salaries can range anywhere from $30,000 from entry level positions, typically working on web content all the way to nearly $100,000 in certain industries where extensive specialized knowledge is required, especially in the creation of medical and technological content.

Finding Out How VoIP Woks

by Torrie Cantor

Not everyone knows about how VoIP works. VoIP, after all, is one of the latest technological advancements in communication. Now, VoIP could be used instead of standard phone lines. So how does this technology work? How can you benefit from it?

The Latest Technology – The first step to understanding VoIP is to understand present technology. Our phone lines make use of what is known as circuit switching. Your call is passed through a series of switches until it reaches your recipient and the circuit is opened. In the span of time that you are on the line, the circuit remains open even at times when there is dead air. Even if you are just listening or not talking, the dedicated line is open. Since you are using this particular line, you have to pay for the number of minutes that you have been on it. The dead air is therefore considered a waste that you have to pay for.

How It Functions – VoIP functions differently. There is no circuit switching and no dedicated line. What is present is packet switching. With packet switching, your analog audio data is converted to digital packets. These packets have their own addresses so they know where they have to go. These packets then proceed to the nearest router to the next until it reaches the recipient. Once the recipient gets the packets, it is converted back to audio form.

A World of Difference – There is a big difference about how VoIP works. There is obviously no dedicated line. The packets also take different routes depending in which is most accessible. Other routes remain open for the exit or entry of other data packets. There is thus no need to pay for the dead air in which no data is sent. The lack of a dedicated line is what makes VoIP primarily cheaper than traditional phone lines.

How It Connects – Aside from the lesser cost of VoIP, its accessibility is also a major attraction. You can use VoIP whenever and wherever there is internet connection. In our world today, the internet is accessible in almost any place where people are expected to use them. This piece of technology is therefore a big bonus for people who need to travel a lot. You no longer have to spend for long distance calls that can take a big chunk off your budget. VoIP offers the chance to save a lot on the cots of calls.

The Downside – The problem with VoIP though is that it still has a lot of kinks to be worked out. There are still many services that rely on the typical audio communications set-up. One important service for example is 911. When a 911 call is received, there is instant recognition of a caller’s exact location. This is still something that isn’t possible through VoIP. The packets that are sent simply have IP addresses on them but no physical addresses.

The Limits in Technology – Aside from this downside, VoIP is also prone to the weaknesses of computer technology. Your computer could crash or you could lose packets in the process of transmission. This is a big problem if you are transmitting very important information. Your packet data could also fall victim to viruses and hackers.

Generally though, there are definitely more advantages in how VoIP works compared to its disadvantages. There is still a need however, to further improve the technology to ensure that users are satisfied and kept safe.

Keeping Your ID Card Protected With A Badge Holder

by Jack Blake

While working in a call center for a telecommunications company I received a badge. The name of the badge holder used was Proximity Card Badge Holder. The holder contained a retractable cord and it enabled me to affix it to my attire without having to stress about misplacing it.

I found that my badge holder held up quite well. I used it for a year, and never had any problems with it even with all the wear and tear I put on it. I would keep it in my pocket and my purse among other things, and it was never torn or damaged.

My supervisor had the same badge holder as I and he was able to get three years of use out of his badge holder. He was not as careful with his badge holder and even though he was rough it still held up. The badge holder prevented him from losing his badge when he had to travel for business.

The badge holders have a very nice feature because they are transparent. When I would arrive at my office I didn’t have to remove my badge from the holder to badge in. All I had to do was place the badge in front of the scanner and it granted me access to the office. If I didn’t have a good badge holder I would most likely have to deal with security and that can take up a lot of time.

The best thing about the Proximity Card Badge Holder is that it was very reasonably priced. My boss ordered hundreds of these at cost, and he told me that these were the only ones he used. We worked in a large corporation, and it was always nice to have a quality product at a good cost. I think if I were a business owner who needed to get badge holders, I would definitely use the Proximity Card Badge Holder. I have always enjoyed using these, and I would like to think that my employees would love using them as well. They would even work if you had to swipe your badge through a badge reader, because they’re thin and very durable.

A great thing about the badge holder is the fact that when you’ve got your badge secured in the badge holder, you never have to worry about losing it. I’ve never turned my badge holder upside down and worried about losing my badge. When you have to pay a good amount of money to get a new badge, it’s one less thing to worry about. It’s also a great security feature if you’re taking your badge to your car in a large parking lot, and the wind catches it. I wouldn’t ever want to have to worry about a stranger using my badge to break in to a large building and hack into the computers or anything like that. I would get into a lot of trouble for that, and thankfully I never had to worry because the badge holder withstood it’s test.

Beginning Steps of Niche Marketing

by Ryan

Expert internet marketers use niche marketing to gain search engine traffic in large markets that they would otherwise be unable to target. A popular market is often dominated and extremely competitive. Choosing to target more specific parts of a large market is how niche marketers optimize their market share.

You’ll need some help at first so let’s get started. In order to reach your customer you’re going to have to understand your target market. To target customers in that market select a niche and gain in that market by targeting a specific customer. Try to narrow down what exactly your customer is looking for using popular descriptions, size, color, etc and be specific.

1. The first thing you need to do is pick a unique niche. A good way to approach this is to pick a niche you know a lot about. You’ll be able to work faster because you won’t have to research a lot, since you know a lot of information already.

If you haven’t already you’ll soon realize that customers or people in general have a lot of questions. They use search engines to find information, answer questions, and/or solve problems. Starting a Q&A for whatever you’re trying to promote is a good way to generate traffic and instill trust in your visitors.

2. Figure out where your competition is already setup. Do a search for what niche you’re considering using a search engine, acting as if you were really searching, and see what comes up. It’s always easier to target a keyword or keyword phrase that has little or no competition.

3. Try to speak in terms your visitors will understand and can vibe with so to speak. If you’re trying to market hip hop CDs to hip hop fans make sure you’re using the proper lingo. You have to make sure your readers believe you’re an expert on the subject or have an idea what you’re talking about.

Make sure you do your research on your topic unless you’re already an expert. If your content doesn’t appeal to your readers it’s going to hurt you tremendously. All it takes is a few poorly written paragraphs to lose most visitors. Take a look at what your competition is using and compare it to what you’re already using or planning on using.

Even though these are just the basics to get you started in Niche Marketing they are extremely important. If you choose what you think is an uncompetitive niche but it turns out it’s already dominated by your competition you’ll find yourself spending a lot of extra time. Doing your homework usually pays off in the long run.

Entry Level Accountant Jobs

by Mary Bush

There are plenty of entry level opportunities for new accounting graduates. In recent years there have been smaller numbers of students choosing accounting as their field of study creating a shortage of accounting graduates. There are several reasons for this; one the requirements have become tougher; two the field has gotten a bad reputation from accounting scandals; and three increasingly complex laws and regulations have made it an unpopular field to work in for many.

There are four basic fields of accounting: Public Accounting; Managerial Accounting; Governmental Accounting; and, Internal Auditing. Each of these fields has widely varying job duties, however the fundamental tasks of the profession broadly stated “are to prepare, analyze, and verify financial documents in order to provide information to clients”. Most accounting jobs require at least a bachelor degree in accounting, but previous job experience is also helpful and most collages offer part time and summer internships.

It is important for aspiring accountants to have an aptitude for math and be and able to analyze, compare, and interpret facts and figures quickly and accurately. Good communication skills both verbally and in writing are essential. Accountants must be able to work with people, business systems, and computers effectively and have a familiarity with basic accounting and computer software packages as well as be able to understand complex law regulations and accounting concepts.

As mentioned earlier the requirements for accountants have become more stringent in recent years. As of 2007, 42 States and the District of Columbia required CPA candidates to have 150 semester hours of college coursework, which is an additional 30 hours beyond the usual four year bachelor’s degree and several other States are in the process of implementing similar requirements. Many schools have altered their programs as a result and now offer masters degrees as part of the 150 hours. Becoming a CPA will be much more difficult in the future. Even though CPAs are regulated by their individual states, the very rigorous two day four-part Uniform CPA Examination is used throughout the United States. Also there is an experience requirement for a CPA certificate in most states; however requirements vary from state to state.

According to Robert Half International a private recruiting firm specializing in accounting and auditing both the job and salary outlook is very good for entry level accountants for the next ten years. Their conclusions are supported by figures from the federal government as well. Logically, the best opportunities will exist for those with a masters degree, a certification or expertise with accounting and auditing software, so the better prepared candidates will find the best entry level opportunities and also the best chances for advancement. To improve your chances of getting a great job test your skills by taking the accountant college course online.
