Every day, the stock market seems to continue its precipitous drop towards worthlessness, crushing hopes, dreams, and investors in a flurry of dizzying price movements. Yet there is an answer; a light in the darkness, used by the masters of investment to generate excess returns even ” no, scratch that, – especially in falling markets like this one.

Masters of short term stock speculation have long known about an ill-understood trading technique shunned by the masses. This technique makes money as stock prices fall, rather then profiting as they rise. This technique is known as shorting stock. Unlike purchasing a stock, where you buy it, and then hope that it goes up in value, or that you can collect the dividends from the stock far into the future, shorting a stock is a simple technique the masters use when they believe the stock will go DOWN. A risky play under normal conditions, but in a market like this, where most everything is dropping like a rock, its much safer then buying stocks.

To short a stock is essentially to sell it, and then buy it at a later date. Counter-intuitive, no? In the shorting process, you borrow the stock from your broker, sell it on the open market, and when the price has fallen sufficiently, you buy it back again, and return it to your broker.

An example… In early October, Kellogg (K) was trading for around $56.00 per share. Over the next two months, it dropped from just over $55.00, to $42.00 per share. Shorting 100 shares of Kellogg would have, in this instance, had a profit of $1400. The procedure would be the following. When you short the stock at $56.00, you borrow 100 shares from your broker, and sell them on the open market, giving you $5600. Later on, you decide to buy back those shares, and return them to your broker, while Kellogg is at $42.00. This costs you $4200. Now you have covered your short position, for a profit of $1400. Not to shabby for 2 months, and a $5600 investment.

For those abstract thinkers, it may be easier to conceptualize shorting as simply buying a negative number of shares. When you own 500 shares of a company, and the companies stock price increases by $1.00, you make $500. When you own -500 shares of a company, and the companies stock price increases by $1.00, you lose $500. However, when you own -500 shares, and that company then plummets by 5$, now you stand to gain $2500. As they say, the bull goes up the stairs, but the bear goes out the window. Markets fall faster then they rise, so the time to make money is now!

Even still, shorting stocks has risks. If you choose the one stock of 100 that is about to start trending upwards, you could lose some money on that. Different sectors of the economy may also be effected by events that cause exceptions to the everything goes down in bear markets rule. The recent auto bailout could feasibly cause industrials to go up for a while, so shorting industrials could choose to be a bad choice. The biggest risk is that the bear market turns into a bull market while your not paying attention ” that could rack up losses on many positions at once.

One standard practice among investment professionals is the 5% rule. This rule is used when deciding how many shares of a company to buy/short, and is an invaluable tool when shorting stocks. Lets say you want to short a $15 stock, but your not sure how many shares to short. First take the amount of money in your portfolio, say, $10000. Then, take 5% of that. $500. That is the amount you can risk on this transaction. Next determine the most logical stop loss. Lets say you decide if the stock goes above $17.50, youll sell your shares using a stop loss. If you can lose 2.50 per share, and your willing to risk $500, then you would short 200 shares of the stock, maximum. Many risk adverse investors choose only 2 or 3%, but 5% serves as a good maximum for even most risk-tolerant investors.

When it comes to stock picking, some people would call this a challenging market. And traditionally, we have been taught that buying low and selling high is the idea scenario, so looked at from that sense, perhaps it is a challenging market. Or is it? Before we go any further, lets define the term: Supreme Self-Confidence is the outward expression of an emotion that communicates to others that the individual in question:

a) Has a firm grasp of reality and the work that needs to be done, b) Has a major purpose they are diligently working towards, c) Believes to their core that they can provide a World Class solution, d) Moves calmly in the direction of their vision undeterred by all circumstances and naysayers.

Is it any doubt why these people tend to be successful? How do you feel when you come across someone you respect who appears to have a plan and communicates through their body language that they confidently have the ability to execute? Most of us feel very good, because deep down this is an attribute we all strive for. These individuals are seen as islands of paradise in an ocean of worry, doubt, fear and anxiety perpetrated by the media and individuals with a negative mental attitude.

Now that we have a working definition of Supreme Self-Confidence how do we cultivate it in our lives?

1) The first step is understanding exactly who you are in terms of: Your values, beliefs and philosophy of life Your perceived strengths and weaknesses in the major aspects of your life such as your health, relationships, business, career, and overall personality traits etc.

2) The second step is to clearly understand what you want. Most of us set goals based on what we think we can do, or what we know we can do, and not what we really want. We need to have a clear purpose that can be emotionalized to serve as our foundation for building Supreme Self-Confidence.

3) The third step is to realize that thoughts are things and they need to observed and respected. Based on addressing the first two steps our thoughts need to be written down. The process helps to clarify your thinking to ensure you develop a laser like focus that is necessary to achieve your goals. After your write down your thoughts, you need to answer the very important question Why do I want it? Do not settle for all the common answers ” you must find an answer that you can really become emotional about.

4) The fourth step is to condition your mind. Supreme Self-Confidence comes from conditioning your mind on an ongoing basis. You can do this through the process of auto suggestion which is how we volitionally impact our subconscious mind. As you become emotional, your subconscious mind listens and then controls everything you attract into your life in terms of people and resources. This process is critical and always comes before any sustainable action. You need to clearly see yourself being successful at the task at hand down to the very last detail. As you see this happening in your mind over and over again, you will build a white hot burning desire that will begin to radiate from you with everyone you meet.

5) The fifth step is a heightened sense of awareness. Supreme Self-Confidence requires awareness for how you come across to others. You must become hyperaware of how you dress, how you move, how you greet people, your posture when you sit and when you stand, and the tone and fluctuation of your voice. In short every perceivable attribute that can be observed visually along with your body language that is observed at a subconscious level must be considered. A professional is at their best at all times ” always remember this. The above should not be misunderstood to be someone else ” just be the highest and best version of yourself.

6) The six and final step is to take action. Taking action shows to your subconscious mind that you are serious and not a wishful thinker. As you take action, the conscious and subconscious mind work together to build momentum in the direction of your definite purpose. Taking action helps you develop a healthy obsession for what you want.

As you think about these six basic steps, I want you to make a commitment to objectively examine yourself in relation to the above every 3 months and make course corrections. This process ensures that you are internally aligned ” when this happens you will express this quiet Supreme Self-Confidence to everyone you meet. This self-confidence will in turn draw the people and resources you need to fulfill your vision. As you fulfill your vision, you will use this positive experience to give yourself even more momentum for the next vision you conceptualize and move forward on. Exit interviews are sometimes held at inopportune times, especially from the viewpoint of the employee when he or she is either laid off or fired. Nevertheless, they are a must for progressive companies that want to look inward for reasons for an employee’s exit.

There are different viewpoints about these interviews as to the need for them in the first place. Should the exiting employee participate in it? If yes, how will it benefit him or her?
