What is franchising?

Franchising is when the owner of the business (the Franchisor) grants a licence to another person or business (the Franchisee) to use their business idea. In the agreement the licence will be for a fixed duration of time, and will give the franchisee permission to use the franchisor’s name, product, service and association. Therefore you will be making a connection with a recognised brand name, and working to make a return on your investment, using the franchisor’s products and services. The franchisor will already have a successful system in place, and you will be working by the rules of this system.

The advantages of Franchising

If you are thinking of buying a franchise, there are many advantages associated with this. You should think about some of the following:

The level of risk associated with investing in the business is reduced substantially. If the other franchises have already been successful, you will be working with a proven idea, and should be making profit faster

The more recognised the brand name is, the more you will benefit from it. Customers prefer to deal with the ‘known’ rather than the ‘unknown’

The franchisor will in most cases, be able to offer you on-going training and support. This will be extremely beneficial to you as you will gain useful tips and knowledge from an already experienced business set-up

The banks will be more helpful towards assisting you financially as they will be aware that you will be operating a franchise with a good reputation

Whilst there are many positives associated with franchising, there are also some drawbacks. It is up to you to assess the weighting of each before you reach your final decision:

You will not have complete control in running the business. Therefore you will have to be content with following some rules and regulations, and be able to adhere to certain restrictions

The more well-known the franchise is, the more expensive it is likely to be. You will have to be prepared to dig deep into your pockets for this

Depending on how well the franchise is doing, there is an element of risk that it may go out of business

The level of support and training you will receive will depend on the type of franchise you go for. Not every franchise will offer you a large amount of support. It is advisable that you investigate this further before you make a decision

1. Items under $10 It sounds like a great idea – after all, everyone likes a bargain don’t they? But items that sell for under $10 have one big problem: Shipping. It’s quite likely that the shipping for the item will cost more than the item itself and this can be very off-putting to buyers. For example, if the item costs $4.50 and shipping costs $6, the total cost for the item is $10.50. If the buyer can purchase the item at their local store for $8, then this suddenly becomes a much better deal. For small items and accessories, the way to get around this problem is by grouping the items together, such as sets of 6 golf-balls or 5 tea towels.

2. Products everyone else are selling Many sellers think that the best way to get started on eBay is to sell items that everyone else is selling. Surely those super hot items such as ipods, cell phones, psps and so on will be a quick route to riches? Well, no. The sellers who are already selling these items are not only more established on eBay – and thus familiar to and trusted by buyers – but they will be able to buy wholesale stock in larger bulks lots than you will, so their prices will always be better. Thus it will almost certainly be very difficult for you to make a profit in a market that is already well supplied.

3. Things you love…but no-one else does Hobbies can be a great way of making money, but only if plenty of other people are interested in them too. Another scenario is when you find a product that you think is absolutely wonderful and could be the next best thing…but no-one seems interested in buying it. Oh well you think, it’s only short term, eventually they’ll learn about my item and start flocking to buy it. Ah, no they won’t. It’s lonely work trying to educate people on the benefits of a product all on your own. As fabulous as the product might be, it’s nigh-on impossible to start a trend on your own. To make money from a trend, you need magazines and newspapers, word of mouth and television to do some of the work for you.

4. Difficult items to ship – e.g. fragile china and plants Now I’m not saying that these are bad items to sell altogether. Many sellers do very well from these items. But I don’t suggest you sell such difficult items when you are first starting out. Both these items have an above-average shipping risk, particularly if not packed properly. As a new seller, any negative feedback you receive at this early stage could be especially damaging to your career.

5. Very large items Thinking of starting with furniture or pianos? Unless you already have experience selling and shipping these items, then it might be wise to start with something smaller. Shipping such large items is a major operation. Not only that, these items will sell less often than mid-priced items as they won’t attract the same number of impulse buyers.

Staying connected with your co-workers is very important these days. Therefore, a good mobile phone plan is quite important. With a plethora of different mobile phones and plans to choose from, finding the right one could be tricky. Luckily, I?m here to offer my help.

Mobile phones have come a long way from the brick phones of the late 80?s. Now there are many different styles, all bringing something different to the table. With such a wide array of phones to choose from, you?ll need to know the ups and downs for each type. It?s for this reason that I?d like to start by telling you about the different mobile phone styles available to you and your business.

A standard mobile phone is the kind where all the keys and the screen are fully exposed. This offers easy, quick access to your buttons but these phones also have some draw backs. It?s not unusual for the screen to scratch or for people to even dial numbers on accident with the phone in their pocket or purse. If you?re getting a standard phone, make sure you use the ?lock? feature most come with so you don?t accidentally call Afghanistan for twenty minutes, like I did once, it was pretty pricey.

Flip phones are my personal favorite, based on their practical design. These mobile phones are usually in two different sections connected with a hinge. The screen is commonly on the top half while the keys are on the bottom half. Flip phones close at the hinge, folding the phone in half to protect your screen while keeping you from accidentally placing any pocket calls. The flip phones are certainly the most logical design, if you ask me.

Slider phones are kind of hybrids between standard phones and flip phones. Instead of flipping, though, slider phones typically slide open. While this does serve to protect the keys from placing mistake calls, the screen is completely exposed to possibly get scratched. It can also be quite difficult to find carrying cases for sliders, as the design makes it practically impossible to design a case to fully protect the phone while still allowing full use.

The last variation of the mobile phone is the PDA device. These devices are much more than just mobile phones, some cross the line into pocket P.C.s, they?re so powerful. PDA?s are ideal for the business person who really needs to stay connected, as you can send and receive email, use the internet and, of course, place your calls. These bigger, bulkier devices are often more expensive for the added functionality, but for the business person in need, there is no substitution for a good PDA phone.

So now you?ve got a mobile phone but you still need your plan. Mobile phone plans come in a wide array of different options and prices. Business plans are quite different from the personal plan you may have. A fleet plan would cover your entire business, the prices vary based on the size of your company and the features you’ll use. It?s smart to pay attention to the features, do you rely on text messages to do any of your business? If so you’ll likely want a plan that offers low rates on text messages as they can get pretty pricey if you?re not covered for them. As long as you go in totally aware of your companies needs then finding a plan right for you should be simple.

Mobile Phones and plans can be tricky if you?re new to this kind of stuff. Hopefully I?ve been able to help clear the air a bit and give you some clarity on the issue. As long as you go in prepared, finding the right phones and plan for your business should be simple. The best plan of action is to have a plan of action, be prepared and you?ll be just fine.

Have you noticed how anytime you walk in to a book store and find your way to the business or financial books all the views that are expressed in the titles are very similar??? In one way or another they all call out for a monetary version of bloodshed. I mean the titles are about “how you can crush the other guy”or “it’s not personal its business”, “How to come out on top” etc etc. Years ago when I got into the real estate investment game I spent hours looking thru the book titles. Trying to find the one book that would teach me how to become that REAL ESTATE INVESTING GOD I knew I could become. After reading many of the most popular books of the time I actually would feel beat up over the content. I mean did I have to be a “take no prisoners” type of investor? Did I have to prey on some one else’s misfortune?? The answer was no. However I did need to learn to take somethings to heart,and NEVER let go of them. I liken it to building my investment suit of armor so to say. So I set out to build a list of my investment rules. We each should have our own set of investment rules. It will help you keep the animal investor inside of you in check. In my case,being that I am a VERY competitive aggressive alpha male type personality I need rules that would keep me “Human”. My own set of personal laws that would keep me on the “non predatory” path. Doc’s Rules for investing:

1) Your personal guidelines: Define and follow some personal guidelines. This is the most important rule I have. These guidelines define the investments I will go after as well as the amount of investment I’m willing to part with to get it. It outlines my investment tactic as well as how I want to conduct my the business of this investment Things to include are: Top dollar amount and lowest dollar amount. Type of investment you want to deal with. Period of term for investment.. Etc etc. (Between you and me I even have a guideline about the amount of time I will work per-day)

2) Remember some ones family is behind the deal you?re working on. Simply put,whoever you are dealing with has mouths to feed. Treat everyone with dignity and respect. If the price they are offering still falls within the personal investing guidelines you have set for yourself don’t use your position to abuse the seller. If you are getting the house for .40 cents on the dollar,don’t be a jerk and push for .30 cents. Always remember…it could be you in the sellers postion. (This rule DOES NOT come in to play when dealing with a bank owned property)

3) Always ask for what you want. Where does it say you can’t ask for something in an investment deal you like? I.E. if you’re looking at a piece of real estate, ask the seller if they would be willing to throw in new carpet to the sale. I knew a investor who was looking at a house that had been on the market for more than 6 months, when he went to talk to the seller he happen to see a 1954 Merc Coupe in the garage,so he asked if it was included in the deal. The deal eventually closed for the house AND the car. 4) Offer everyone the chance to make money as a bird dog for you. I always give several of my business cards to anyone I do business with and offer them a portion of any profit I make from any investments they help me locate. You would be amazed at how many people are willing to help you make money when they get a small part of it for doing very little work. (And if you follow rule #2 you will be amazed at how many of those bird dogs will sing your praises from the highest mountains)

Just some ideas of things to keep in mind when you’re working on your investment mindset. I have used these rules over the years,and in many cases they, have gotten me more return and repeat networking opportunities then I can count.
